Acceptance and increase of charity from pure earnings
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people! Allah is pure (i.e., free from all defects and deficiencies) and accepts only that which is pure (i.e., lawful). And Allah has commanded the believers with the same command that He gave to the Messengers. He said: "O Messengers! Eat of the good things and do righteous deeds. Indeed, I am Knowing of what you do." And He said: "O you who believe! Eat of the good things which We have provided for you." Then he mentioned a man who undertakes a long journey, disheveled and dusty, and he raises his hands towards the sky and says: O Lord, O Lord! While his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful, and he is nourished with unlawful things—so how can his supplication be accepted?

Do not belittle small charity
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Muslim women! None of you should consider insignificant the gift to her neighbor, even if it is only a sheep’s hoof. (That is, neither should the recipient reject it considering it insignificant, nor should the giver refrain from giving it out of embarrassment.)

Explanation of Allah’s saying:“Those who criticize the volunteers...”
Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were commanded to give charity, and we used to carry loads (to earn for it). Sayyiduna Abu Aqil (may Allah be pleased with him) gave half a sa’ in charity (i.e., about one and a quarter seer), and another person gave more than that. So the hypocrites began to say: Allah has no need of this one’s charity, and the other has only given charity to show off. Then this verse was revealed:“Those who criticize the believers who give charity willingly, and those who find nothing to give except their effort (wages)…”

Whoever combines charity with other good deeds
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever spends a pair (i.e., two coins, or two rupees, or two dinars), he will be called in Paradise: O servant of Allah! Come here, for here is goodness and virtue for you. Then, the one who is habitual in prayer will be called from the gate of prayer, and the one who is habitual in jihad will be called from the gate of jihad, and the one who is habitual in charity will be called from the gate of charity, and the one who is habitual in fasting will be called from the gate of fasting. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! There is no need for anyone to be called from all the gates, but will there be anyone who will be called from all the gates? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Yes, and I hope (by the grace of Allah) that you will be among them.

Sidna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Who among you is fasting today?" Sidna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I am." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Who among you has followed a funeral today?" Sidna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I have." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Who among you has fed a needy person today?" Sidna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I have." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Who among you has visited a sick person today?" Sidna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I have." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "When all these deeds are combined in a person, he will certainly enter Paradise."

Saying“Subhanallah, La ilaha illallah”and other good deeds are charity
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that some companions came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! The wealthy have taken all the reward, for they pray as we pray, fast as we fast, and give charity from their surplus wealth." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Has not Allah made for you means of charity? Every tasbih (saying Subhan Allah) is charity, every takbir is charity, every tahmid (saying Alhamdulillah) is charity, every saying of (La ilaha illallah) is charity, enjoining good is charity, forbidding evil is charity, and fulfilling the right of one's spouse is charity." The people said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! If one of us fulfills his desire (i.e., has relations with his wife), is there reward for him in that?" He (peace be upon him) said, "Do you not see, if he were to fulfill it in a forbidden way, would he not bear a sin? Likewise, when he fulfills it in a lawful way, he will have a reward."

Obligation of charity on every joint
Narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Every human body has three hundred and sixty joints. So whoever says "Allahu Akbar," "Alhamdulillah," "La ilaha illallah," "Subhanallah," "Astaghfirullah," removes a stone from people's path, or removes a thorn or a bone from the path, or teaches a good word or commands it, or forbids an evil thing, then this is equal to the count of the three hundred and sixty joints (that is, it is equal to giving thanks for them), and on that day he walks in such a state that he has freed himself from Hell. Abu Tawbah added in his narration that he reaches the evening in this state (that he is freed from Hell).

Acceptance of misplaced charity
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: A man said, "Tonight I will give some charity." He took his charity and went out (he intended to conceal the charity, so he went out at night) and gave it into the hand of an adulterous woman. In the morning, people began to talk that last night someone gave charity to an adulterous woman. He said, "O Allah! All praise is for You, my charity ended up with an adulteress." Then he said, "Today I will give charity again." He went out and gave it to a wealthy person. In the morning, people began to talk that today someone gave charity to a rich man. He said, "O Allah! All praise is for You, my charity ended up with a wealthy person." On the third day, he said again, "I will give charity." He went out and gave charity into the hand of a thief. In the morning, people began to talk that today someone gave charity to a thief. He said, "O Allah! All praise is for You, my charity ended up with an adulterous woman, a wealthy person, and a thief." Then a person came to him (meaning an angel or the prophet of that time) and said to him, "All your charities have been accepted. The adulteress, so that perhaps she may refrain from adultery (because she committed adultery for her livelihood); as for the wealthy person, it was accepted so that perhaps he may feel ashamed and take a lesson that others give charity, so he too should give, and spend from the wealth Allah has given him; and the thief, so that perhaps he may refrain from stealing (because today his need was fulfilled)."

About the generous and the miser
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The example of a miser and a charitable person is like two men wearing iron armor. When the generous person wants to give charity, his armor becomes loose, until it begins to erase the marks of his footsteps. And when the miser wants to give charity, his armor becomes tight, and his hands get stuck to his neck, and each ring gets locked into the next ring. The narrator of the hadith (Sayyiduna Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that then he tries to loosen it, but it does not become loose.
