Giving charity to maternal uncles
It is narrated from Sayyida Maymunah bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) that she freed a slave-girl during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "If you had given her to your maternal uncles, it would have been a greater cause of reward for you."

Maintaining ties with polytheist mother
Lady Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that my mother has come and she is disinterested in the religion (in other narrations it is mentioned that she is a polytheist), so should I treat her kindly and do good to her? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied: Yes.

Giving charity on behalf of deceased mother
Narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that a man came and asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): "My mother died suddenly and did not have the chance to make a will. If she had spoken, she would have given charity. If I give charity on her behalf, will she receive the reward?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes."

Encouragement to give to the needy and reward for starting a good practice
‘Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that at the beginning of the day, we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Some people came who were barefoot, naked, wearing leather sheets around their necks, with their swords hanging, most of them, in fact all of them, were from the tribe of Mudar. Seeing their poverty and destitution, the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) went inside and then came out. (That is, he became distressed. Subhan Allah, what compassion and sympathy he had!) And he ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to call the adhan, then the takbir was said, and the prayer was performed, and the sermon was delivered, and this verse was recited:“O people! Fear Allah, Who created you from a single soul...”(He recited this so that it would be known that all the children of Adam are brothers to each other) ... until the end of the verse. Then he recited this verse from Surah Al-Hashr:“O you who believe! Fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has sent forth for tomorrow...”(Then the market of charity became active.) Someone gave a gold coin, someone gave a dirham, someone started giving a sa’ of wheat, and someone a sa’ of dates, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Even if it is only a piece of a date (bring it as charity).”Then a man from the Ansar brought a bag, so much so that his hand became tired, in fact, it became exhausted. Then the people began to give in succession, until I saw two heaps of food and clothing, so much (charity was collected) that I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) shining, as if it were gold, like pure gold. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Whoever initiates a good practice in Islam (that is, something from the Book and Sunnah), for him is the reward of his own action and the reward of those who act upon it after him, without their reward being diminished in the least. And whoever introduces a bad practice in Islam (that is, something which the Book and Sunnah have prohibited), upon him is the burden of his own action and the burden of those who act upon it after him, without their burden being diminished in the least.”

Charity to the poor and travelers
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: A man heard a voice in a cloud in the open field saying,“Water the garden of so-and-so.”(After this voice) the cloud moved to one side and rained water on a rocky land. One of the channels among its channels became completely full. So that man followed the water as it flowed, and suddenly he saw a man standing in his garden, diverting the water here and there with his spade. He said to the owner of the garden,“O servant of Allah! What is your name?”He replied,“So-and-so,”the same name that was heard in the cloud. Then the garden owner said to this man,“O servant of Allah! Why did you ask my name?”He replied,“I heard a voice in the cloud, someone was saying, ‘Water the garden of so-and-so,’ and he mentioned your name. So, what gratitude do you show for Allah’s favor in this garden?”The garden owner said,“Since you have said this, now I will tell you. I see whatever income comes from this garden, I give one third of it in charity, one third my wife and children eat, and one third I spend on the garden.”(From this hadith, it is understood that spending one third of wealth in the way of Allah is better, and it is also known that angels, by the command of Allah Almighty, cause rain to fall—at one place more, at another less.) In another narration, it is stated:“I spend one third on the poor, the beggars, and the travelers.”

Save yourself from Hell with even a piece of date in charity
Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned Hell and turned his face away out of dislike. Then he said,“Protect yourselves from the Fire (the Fire of Hell).”Then he turned his face away out of dislike, until we thought that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was looking at it (the Fire of Hell). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Protect yourselves from Hell—even if it be with half a date (by giving it in charity). If someone does not find even that, then (let him protect himself) by saying a good word.”

Virtue of giving charity secretly
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said: There are seven types of people whom Allah Almighty will grant shade (i.e., under the Throne) on the Day when there will be no shade except His shade. First, a just ruler (who judges according to the Book and Sunnah, whether he is a king or a governor); second, a youth who grows up in the worship of Allah; third, a person whose heart remains attached to the mosque; fourth, two people who love each other for the sake of Allah, meet for His sake and part for His sake; fifth, a man (such a pious man) whom a woman of noble lineage and wealth invites to commit adultery, and he says, "I fear Allah" (and refrains from adultery); sixth, a person who gives charity so secretly that his right hand does not know what his left hand has spent (there is some variation in this wording; the correct version is that the left hand does not know what the right hand has spent); seventh, a person who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes overflow with tears (due to love or fear of Allah).

Virtue of giving charity while healthy and eager
Sidna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Which charity is the best and most rewarding?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "That you give charity while you are healthy and eager, fearing poverty and hoping for wealth. And do not delay giving charity until the soul reaches the throat and you begin to say, 'This is for so-and-so, and this wealth is for so-and-so,' while it has already become the property of so-and-so (i.e., as soon as you die, your heirs will take it)."

Acceptance and increase of charity from pure earnings
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, who states: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever gives charity from his pure (lawful) earnings, even if it is a single date, Allah Almighty takes it in His right hand and nurtures it as one of you nurtures his colt or young she-camel, until it (the charity of a single date) becomes like a mountain or even greater than that.
