Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim
No harm in women accompanying warriors.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that (his mother) Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) took a dagger on the day of Hunayn. She had it with her when Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw it, so he mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), saying: "This is Umm Sulaym, and she has a dagger with her." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked (Umm Sulaym), "What is this dagger for?" Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "O Messenger of Allah! If any polytheist comes near me, I will rip open his belly with this dagger." Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) laughed. Then Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "O Messenger of Allah! Kill the Tulaqa (i.e., the people of Makkah) except for us, for they only became Muslim after being defeated by you (and did not accept Islam from their hearts)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "O Umm Sulaym! Allah has sufficed (protected) us from the evil of the disbelievers in the best manner (so there is no need for you to carry a dagger now)."
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that on the day of Uhud, people, having been defeated, fled and left the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). And Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood as a shield in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was a very skilled archer; two or three of his bows broke that day. Whenever someone came out with a quiver of arrows, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would say to him, "Keep these arrows for Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him)." When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would raise his head to look at the disbelievers, Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) would say, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! May my parents be sacrificed for you, do not raise your head, lest any arrow of the disbelievers strike you. My chest is in front of your chest (i.e., Abu Talhah had put his chest forward so that if any arrow came, it would hit him)." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I saw Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha bint Abi Bakr and Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with them), both of them had lifted their clothes (as one does while working), and I could see the anklets on their shins. Both of them would bring water skins on their backs, then give water to the people, then go back, fill them, bring them again, and give water to the people." And from the hand of Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), the sword fell two or three times due to drowsiness.
Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I participated in battles with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), stayed in the place where the men stayed, cooked their food, treated the wounded, and served the sick.
Prohibition of killing women and children in jihad.
`Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) reports that a woman was found killed in a battle, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the killing of women and children.
On enemy women and children killed in night raids.
'Sayyiduna Sa'b bin Jathamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that' the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about the children and women of the polytheists, when they are killed during a night raid? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "They are from among them."
Cutting and burning enemy date palms.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had some of the date-palm trees of Banu Nadir cut down and some burned. On this occasion, Sayyiduna Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him) recited these verses: "It became easy for the chiefs and nobles of Banu Lu’ayy (i.e., Quraysh) that the orchard of Buwairah is engulfed in flames." And regarding this, Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Whatever you cut down of [their] palm trees or left standing on their trunks, it was by permission of Allah and so He would disgrace the defiantly disobedient." (__QUR_N__ al-Hashr: 5).
Consuming food from enemy lands.
`Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) says that on the day of Khaybar, I found a bag of fat. I rushed towards it. I said to myself that I would not give any of it to anyone. He says, I turned around and saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was standing and smiling.
Booty is made lawful exclusively for this ummah.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: One of the Prophets from among the Prophets waged jihad, so he said to his people: No man should go with me who has married a woman and wishes to consummate with her but has not yet done so, nor the one who has built a house but has not yet raised its roof, nor the one who has bought sheep or pregnant she-camels and is waiting for them to give birth (because their hearts will remain attached to these things and they will not be able to participate in jihad with full peace of mind). Then that Prophet waged jihad, and at the time of Asr or near Asr, he reached the village where the jihad was to take place. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to the sun: You are also obedient and I am also obedient. O Allah! Hold it back for a little while over me (so that the night of Saturday does not come, because fighting on Saturday was forbidden and this battle was on Friday). Then the sun was held back until Allah granted them victory. Then the people gathered the spoils of war, and a fire came from the sky to consume it, but it did not consume it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Someone among you has committed treachery in the spoils of war (therefore this offering was not accepted). So let one man from each group pledge allegiance to me. Then all pledged allegiance, and when the hand of one man touched the Prophet’s hand, the Prophet said: Treachery is found among you. Let your tribe pledge allegiance to me. Then that tribe pledged allegiance, and when the hands of two or three men touched the Prophet’s hand and clung to it, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: You have committed treachery. Then they brought out gold equal to the head of a bull. That too was placed with the spoils of war that had been set on high ground (to be consumed by fire). Then the fire came and consumed it. And for those before us, spoils of war were not lawful for anyone; they were made lawful only for us, because Allah saw our weakness and helplessness, so He made the spoils of war lawful for us.
About spoils of war (anfal).
‘Sayyiduna Mus‘ab bin Sa‘d narrates from his father Sa‘d (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Four verses were revealed about me. Once, I found a sword among the spoils of war, brought it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and said,“O Messenger of Allah! Grant this to me.”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Put it down.”Then I stood up (and repeated my request), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Put it back where you took it from.”Then I got up and said,“O Messenger of Allah! Give me this sword.”He said,“Put it down.”Then (for the fourth time) I stood up and said,“O Messenger of Allah! Give me this sword as a share from the spoils of war. Will I remain like a poor person?”Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Put it back where you took it from.”Then this verse was revealed:“They ask you (O Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) about the spoils of war. Say: The spoils of war are for Allah and His Messenger.”(Al-Anfal: 1). (In this hadith, only one of the four verses is mentioned.)
Giving shares and rewards from booty to military units.
`Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a small expedition towards Najd, and I also went in it. There we obtained many camels and goats as spoils of war, so each of us received twelve camels as his share, and the Messenger of Allah gave us one additional camel each.
