Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim
Prohibition of alcohol.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Every intoxicating thing is khamr (wine), and every khamr (wine) is forbidden.
‘Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I received a she-camel as booty on the day of Badr, and on the same day, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me another she-camel from the khums. Then, when I wished to marry Fatimah al-Zahra (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I made an agreement with a goldsmith from Banu Qaynuqa‘ that he would go with me and we would both bring idhkhir (a type of grass), and sell it to the goldsmiths, and from that I would arrange the wedding feast for my marriage. I was gathering the equipment for my two she-camels—saddles, stirrups, ropes, etc.—and both she-camels were sitting beside the room of an Ansari. When I finished gathering this equipment and returned, I saw that both she-camels’ humps had been cut off, their bellies ripped open, and their livers taken out. I could not bear to see this, and my eyes could not hold back (that is, I began to weep—not out of worldly greed, but out of the thought of the shortcoming towards Sayyidah Fatimah al-Zahra and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him). I asked,“Who did this?”People said,“Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) bin ‘Abd al-Muttalib did it, and he is in that house with a group of the Ansar who are drinking wine. In front of them, and in front of his companions, a singing woman sang a song, in which she said, ‘O Hamzah, get up and deal with these fat she-camels at once.’”Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) got up with a sword, cut off their humps, ripped open their bellies, and took out their livers. Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When I heard this, I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), where Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting. As soon as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me, he recognized the grief and distress on my face and said,“What has happened to you?”I said,“O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, I have never seen a day like today. Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) has wronged my two she-camels, cut off their humps, ripped open their bellies, and he is in that house with a few drunkards.”Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called for his cloak, put it on, and then set out on foot. Zayd bin Harithah and I both followed behind him, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the door where Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was and asked permission to enter. The people gave permission. We saw that they had been drinking wine. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to reproach Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) for this action, and Sayyiduna Hamzah’s eyes were red (due to intoxication). He looked at the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then looked at his knees, then raised his gaze to his navel, then raised his gaze to his face, and (being intoxicated) said,“You are nothing but the slaves of my forefathers.”At that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) realized that he was intoxicated, so he turned back and left. We also left with him.
Every intoxicant is forbidden.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came from Jaishan (and Jaishan is a city in Yemen). He asked about the wine of Yemen which was drunk in his country and was made from corn, and it was called Mizr. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Does it intoxicate?" He said, "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whatever intoxicates is forbidden. And Allah Almighty has promised that whoever drinks intoxicants will be made to drink (in the Hereafter) Teenat al-Khabal." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is Teenat al-Khabal?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It is the sweat of the inhabitants of Hell, or the blood and pus that comes out of their bodies."
Alcohol that intoxicates is forbidden.
Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about (a type of) wine called "bat‘" and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Every drink that intoxicates is forbidden.
Whoever drinks wine in this world will not drink it in the Hereafter unless he repents.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever drinks alcohol in this world will not drink it in the Hereafter, unless he repents.
Wine can be made from dates and grapes.
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say that wine is made from these two trees: one is the date-palm and the other is the grapevine.
Wine from fresh and dry dates.
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I was serving wine to Sayyiduna Abu Talha, Abu Dujanah, Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with them), and a group of the Ansar when a person came in and said: "There is news, wine has been declared unlawful." Then, on that very day, we poured out the wine, and that wine was made from gudar (i.e., dates whose color had turned red or yellow but were not yet fit to eat) and dried dates. Qatadah said that Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when wine was prohibited, most of their wine was this khaleet, i.e., made by mixing gudar and dried dates.
Wine from five things.
Narrated Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), praising and glorifying Allah, then said: After praising and glorifying Allah! Know that when wine was made unlawful, it used to be made from five things: wheat, barley, dates, grapes, and honey. And wine is that which clouds the mind (regardless of what it is made from). (By this, the saying of Imam Abu Hanifa is refuted, who said that wine is specific to grapes, because Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said this on the pulpit and all the Companions accepted it, and no one objected, so it became consensus.) O people! I wished that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had explained to us in detail about three things: the inheritance of the grandfather, the inheritance of kalalah, and some chapters regarding usury.
Prohibition of making nabidh from grapes and dates.
`Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) forbade making nabidh by mixing dates and grapes, or by mixing ripe and unripe dates.
`Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Whoever among you drinks nabidh (a drink made from dates or grapes), let him drink only from grapes, or only from dates, or only from dried dates.
