Cover vessels and tie the mouth of water skins.
`Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Cover the vessels and tie the water skins, for there is a night in the year in which a plague descends. Then, whatever uncovered vessel or untied water skin it finds, the plague descends into it. And in one narration, Laith (the narrator) said that among us, in non-Arab lands, people avoid this in "Kanun Awwal" (that is, December).

Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came from Makkah to Madinah, Suraqah bin Malik (on behalf of the polytheists) pursued him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated against him, so his horse sank (into the ground, meaning the earth seized him). He said,“Pray for me, I will not harm you.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed to Allah (so he was saved). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) felt thirsty and passed by a shepherd of goats. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“I took a bowl and milked a little milk for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and brought it to him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) drank it until I was pleased.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that on the night when the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was taken on the journey to Bayt al-Maqdis, two bowls were brought to him. One contained wine and the other contained milk. He, peace and blessings be upon him, looked at both and chose the bowl of milk. Sayyiduna Jibreel, peace be upon him, said: "All praise is due to Allah who guided you to the natural disposition (i.e., Islam and steadfastness). If you had chosen the wine, your Ummah would have gone astray."

Drinking from a cup.
Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was told about an Arab woman. The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered Abu Usaid to convey a proposal to her. He conveyed the proposal, and she came and stayed in the forts of Banu Sa’idah. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out and went to her. When he arrived, he saw a woman with her head lowered. The Prophet (peace be upon him) spoke to her, and she replied,“I seek refuge with Allah from you.”The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,“You have sought protection from me, so I will not say anything to you.”The people said to her,“Do you know who this is?”She said,“No, I do not know.”The people said,“This is the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s mercy and peace be upon him. He came to speak to you about marriage.”She said,“I was unfortunate (when I sought refuge from you, O Messenger of Allah).”(From this hadith, it is known that it is permissible for a suitor to look at the woman he wishes to marry.) Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came that day and sat with his companions in the Saqifah of Banu Sa’idah, and then said to Sahl,“Serve us a drink.”Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I brought out this cup and served everyone. Abu Hazim said: Sahl brought out that cup, and we also drank from it (for blessing). Then, during his caliphate, Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) asked Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) for that cup, and he gifted it to him.

Prohibition of drinking from gold and silver vessels.
‘Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ukeem says that we were with Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Mada’in when he asked for water. A farmer brought water in a silver vessel, so Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) threw the vessel away and said: I am telling you that I had told him not to give me water in a silver vessel, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not drink from gold and silver vessels, and do not wear thick or fine silk, for these things are for (the disbelievers) in this world and for us (Muslims) in the Hereafter on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever drinks from silver vessels is certainly putting the fire of Hell into his belly.

After drinking, the one on the right has more right.
`Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to our house and asked for water. We milked a goat and then mixed water from our well into it and gave it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He drank it, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting to his left, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was in front, and on the right side was a Bedouin. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had drunk to his fill, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), pointing towards (Sayyiduna Abu Bakr), said, "O Messenger of Allah! This is Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave (the remainder) to the Bedouin and did not give to Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), and said, "Those on the right are given precedence, those on the right, then those on the right." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "This is Sunnah, Sunnah, Sunnah."

Seeking permission from the young to give to elders first.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that a drink was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he drank from it. On his right was a boy and on his left were elderly people. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to the boy, "Do you permit me to give it to the elders before you?" He replied, "No, by Allah, I do not wish to give up my share to anyone else." Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) handed it to the boy.
