The Prophet’s saying: Name after me, but not my kunya
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man called another man at the place of Baqi, saying, "O Abu al-Qasim!" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards him, so the man said, "O Messenger of Allah! I did not call you, I called that person (his kunyah must also have been Abu al-Qasim)." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Name yourselves with my name, but do not take my kunyah."

Naming with the name Muhammad
Sidna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a child was born to one of us and he named him Muhammad. His people said to him, "We will not let you keep this name; you are naming him after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." So that man carried his child on his back and brought him to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, a son has been born to me and I have named him Muhammad, but my people say, 'We will not let you do this; you are naming him after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).'" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Name him with my name, but do not use my kunyah (i.e., Abu al-Qasim), for I am al-Qasim; I distribute among you (knowledge of religion, spoils of war, etc.)."

Naming a child Abdur-Rahman
`Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a son was born to one of us, so he named him Qasim. We said, "We will not give you the kunya of Abu al-Qasim, nor will we cool your eyes." He went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that he should name his son Abdur Rahman.

Naming a child Abdullah, wiping over him, and supplicating
‘Urwah bin Zubair and Fatimah bint Mundhir bin Zubair narrate that both of them said that Sayyidah Asma’ (may Allah be pleased with her) set out (from Makkah) with the intention of migration, and she was pregnant with ‘Abdullah bin Zubair (i.e., she was expecting him). When she arrived at Quba’, Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah bin Zubair was born there. After his birth, she brought him to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he (peace be upon him) could perform tahnik for him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took him from Sayyidah Asma’ (may Allah be pleased with her) and seated him in his lap, then asked for a date. Umm al-Mu’minin ‘A’ishah Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that we searched for a date for a while, then finally the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) chewed the date and put (its juice) into his mouth. The very first thing that entered ‘Abdullah’s stomach was the saliva of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyidah Asma’ (may Allah be pleased with her) said that after this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stroked ‘Abdullah and supplicated for him and named him ‘Abdullah. Then, when he was seven or eight years old, at the indication of Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), he came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to pledge allegiance. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him coming, he smiled. Then he took the pledge from him (for blessing, as he was a child).

`Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) had a son who was ill. He (Abu Talha) was out when the boy passed away. When he returned, he asked, "How is my child?" (His wife) Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) replied, "Now he is more at ease than before" (this was an allusion to his death, and not a lie). Then Umm Sulaym brought him the evening meal, and he ate. After that, he had relations with Umm Sulaym. When they were finished, Umm Sulaym said, "Go and bury the child." In the morning, Abu Talha went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of everything that had happened. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Did you have relations with your wife last night?" Abu Talha replied, "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed, "O Allah, bless them both." Later, Umm Sulaym gave birth to a boy, so Abu Talha said to me, "Take this child to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)," and Umm Sulaym sent some dates along with the child. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took the child and asked, "Is there anything with him?" The people replied, "Dates." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the dates, chewed them, then took them out of his mouth and put them into the child's mouth, and performed tahneek for him, and named him Abdullah.

Naming after prophets and righteous people
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when I came to Najran, the (Ansari) people there objected to me, saying,“You recite: ‘O sister of Harun’ (__QUR_N__) (i.e., Maryam is called the sister of Harun), whereas (Sayyiduna Harun was the brother of Musa, peace be upon them) and Musa (peace be upon him) was so long before ‘Isa (peace be upon him). (So how could Maryam be the sister of Harun?)”When I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I asked him about it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“(This is not the same Harun who was the brother of Musa.) It was the custom of Bani Isra’il (just as it is the custom of everyone now) that they would name people after the prophets and the righteous who came before.”

Naming a child Mundhir
Sahl bin Sa’d says that Abu Usaid’s son Mundhir, when he was born, was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed him on his thigh, and (his father) Abu Usaid was sitting. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became occupied with something in front of him, so Abu Usaid ordered, and the child was taken off the Prophet’s thigh. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) noticed, he asked,“Where is the child?”Abu Usaid said,“O Messenger of Allah! We have taken him away.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked,“What is his name?”Abu Usaid said,“Such-and-such name.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“No, his name is Mundhir.”From that day, they named him Mundhir.
