Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim
Changing Barrah’s name to Juwayriyyah
`Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) says that the name of Umm al-Mu'mineen Juwayriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) was previously Barrah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed her name to Juwayriyyah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked that it be said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left the house of Barrah (the righteous wife).
Changing Barrah’s name to Zaynab
Muhammad bin Umar bin Ata says: I named my daughter Barrah, so Zainab bint Abi Salamah said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade this name, and my name was also Barrah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Do not praise yourselves, for Allah knows best who among you is better. The people asked: Then what should we name her? He (peace be upon him) said: Name her Zainab.
Naming grapes“Karam”
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: None of you should call grapes "Karam," for "Karam" refers to a Muslim man.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wa'il bin Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Do not call (grapes) "karm", rather call them "inab" or "hablah".
Prohibition of names: Aflah, Rabah, Yasar, Nafi‘
Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub رضي الله عنه reports that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم forbade us from giving our slaves these four names: Aflah, Rabah, Yasar, and Nafi’.
Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Allah Almighty loves four words the most: (Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah,) and (Allahu Akbar). Whichever of them one says first, it does not matter. And do not name your slave Yasar, Rabah, Najeeh (which has the same meaning as Aflah), or Aflah, because if you ask, "Is he there?" (i.e., Yasar or Rabah or Najeeh or Aflah), and he is not there, then it will be said, "He is not here." These are only four; do not add more to them for me.
Permissibility of above names
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to prohibit naming with names such as Ya’la, Barakah, Aflah, Yasar, and Nafi’ and similar names. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent and did not say anything. After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and he did not prohibit it. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to prohibit it, but then left it and did not prohibit it.
On saying“Sayyid”,“Abd”,“Amah”for slaves,“Mawla”for masters
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: None of you should say to his slave, "Give water to your lord," or "Feed your lord," or "Make ablution for your lord," and none of you should call another "my lord." Rather, say "my master" or "my patron." And none of you should say "my slave" or "my slave-girl," but say "my young man" or "my young woman."
Giving a kunyah to a small child
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most cheerful of all people. I had a brother who was called Abu Umair (from this it is known that it is permissible to use a kunyah for a young child or one who does not have a child). (I think Anas said that) he had been weaned. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would come and see him, he would say, "O Abu Umair! Where is the Nughair?" (Nughair refers to a nightingale or a small bird), and the boy used to play with it.
Calling someone“O my son”
Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: No one asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the Dajjal as much as I did. Finally, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Son, why are you so worried about this? He will not harm you.”I said:“People say that he will have streams of water and mountains of bread with him?”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied:“It is because of this that he will be disgraced in the sight of Allah, the Exalted.”
