Example of one who recites the Qur'an and one who does not
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: The example of a believer who recites the Qur'an is like that of a citron, whose fragrance is pleasant and whose taste is good. And the example of a believer who does not recite the Qur'an is like that of a date, which has no fragrance but its taste is sweet. And the example of a hypocrite who recites the Qur'an is like that of a flower, whose fragrance is good but its taste is bitter. And the example of a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur'an is like that of the colocynth (bitter apple), which has no fragrance and its taste is bitter.
Expert in Qur'an and one who struggles to recite
Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The expert with the Qur'an (this may refer to a Hafiz who also acts upon it) is with the noble angels who write near the Preserved Tablet, and the one who recites the Qur'an and stumbles in it, and it is difficult for him, for him there is a double reward.
Tranquility descends upon Qur'an recitation
Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that a man was reciting Surah Al-Kahf and nearby, a horse was tied with two long ropes. Then a cloud came over him, which began to circle and draw near, and seeing this, his horse started to shy away. When morning came, the man went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned what had happened during the night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“That was tranquility (sakinah) which descended due to the blessing of the Qur’an.”
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Usaid bin Hudair (may Allah be pleased with him) was reciting the Qur'an one night in the place where he dried his dates, when his horse began to jump, and as he recited, the horse would jump. Then he started reciting again, and the horse jumped again. He said, "I feared that (my son) Yahya might be trampled, so I went and stood by him. And what did I see but a canopy above my head, in which there were lights like lamps, and it ascended upwards until it disappeared from sight. Then I did not see it again. In the morning, I went to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and submitted, 'O Messenger of Allah! Last night I was reciting the Qur'an in my enclosure when suddenly my horse began to jump.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'Recite, O son of Hudair!' He said, 'I continued reciting, and the horse jumped again.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'Recite, O son of Hudair!' He said, 'I continued reciting, and the horse kept jumping as before.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'Recite, O son of Hudair!' He said, 'When I finished and Yahya was near the horse, I feared that Yahya might be trampled, so I saw a canopy in which there were lights like lamps, and it ascended upwards until it was out of sight.' Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'Those were angels who were listening to your recitation, and if you had continued reciting, the morning would have come and people would have seen them (the angels), and they would not have remained hidden from their sight.'"
Envy is allowed only in two things
Sayyiduna Salim narrates from his father Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said: "Envy is not permissible except for two men: one to whom Allah has given the Qur'an and he recites it day and night (and acts upon it); the other is the one to whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it (in the way of Allah) day and night."
Command to retain Qur'an through frequent recitation
`Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The example of the one who memorizes the Qur'an is like that of a camel whose leg is tied; if its owner takes care of it, it remains (with him), but if he lets it go, it runs away.
`Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The worst among you is the one who says, "I have forgotten such and such verse." Rather, he should say, "I have been made to forget." And take care of the Qur'an and remember it, for it escapes from people's hearts faster than a tied camel is released.
Beautifying the voice when reciting Qur'an
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that he heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: Allah does not listen to anything as attentively as He listens to a prophet with a beautiful voice who recites the Qur'an aloud in a melodious tone.
Abu Burdah narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: If you had seen me when I was listening to your recitation last night (you would have been very pleased). Indeed, you have been given one of the voices from the voices of the family of Dawud.
Reciting Qur'an with melody (tarji‘)
Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Qurrah says: I heard Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) say that in the year Makkah was conquered, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited Surah Al-Fath on his mount during the journey, and in his recitation he would modulate his voice. Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If I did not fear that people would crowd around me, I would have recited to you the recitation of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
