Reciting aloud at night and listening attentively
Narrated from Ummul Momineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard a person reciting the Qur'an at night and said: May Allah have mercy on him, he reminded me of such-and-such verse which I used to leave out from such-and-such Surah.
Qur'an revealed in seven modes
Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard Hisham bin Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) reciting Surah Al-Furqan in a way different from the way the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had taught me. I was about to seize him quickly, but I gave him respite until he finished reciting. Then I took his cloak, put it around his neck, and dragged him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I heard him reciting Surah Al-Furqan in a manner different from the way you taught me." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Let him go," and told him, "Recite." He recited as I had heard him before, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "This Surah was revealed in this way." Then he said to me, "Recite." So I recited (in the way the Messenger of Allah had taught me), and he also said, "It was revealed in this way." And he said, "The Qur'an has been revealed in seven modes, so recite in whichever is easy for you."
Prophet reciting Qur'an to others
`Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that (and he is the leader of all the reciters) Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has commanded me to recite before you the Surah (Lam Yakunilladhina Kafaru....). He (Ubayy) asked, "Did Allah, Glorified and Exalted, mention my name?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Yes (Allah mentioned your name before me)." So Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep (out of joy).
Prophet reciting Qur'an to the jinn
‘Aamir al-Sha’bi says that I asked Alqamah,“Was Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Night of the Jinn?”He said,“I asked Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), ‘Was any of you with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Night of the Jinn?’ (That is, the night when the Prophet met the jinn.) He said, ‘No, but one day we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and then he was lost from us. So we searched for him in the valleys and mountain passes, but we could not find him. We thought that the jinn had taken him away or that someone had secretly killed him, and we spent the night in the worst state. When morning came, we saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was coming from the direction of Hira (Jabal al-Noor, a mountain between Makkah and Mina). We said,“O Messenger of Allah! Last night we lost you, and when we could not find you despite searching, we spent the night in a very bad state (without you).”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“A caller from among the jinn came to me, so I went with him and recited the Qur’an to the jinn.”Then he took us with him and showed us their traces and the traces of their fires. The jinn asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for provisions, so he said,“Every bone of an animal over which the name of Allah has been mentioned, when it falls into your hands, will be full of meat for you, and every dung of a camel will be food for your animals.”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Do not use bones and dung for istinja (cleaning), for they are the food of your brothers among the jinn (and their animals).”
Ma'n says that I heard from my father, he said: I asked Masruq, "On the night when the jinn came and listened to the Qur'an, who informed the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about this?" He said: Your father (i.e., Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated to me that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was informed of the coming of the jinn by a tree.
Prophet listening to Qur'an from others
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me, "Recite the Qur'an to me." I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Shall I recite the Qur'an to you, while it has been revealed to you?" He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "I desire to hear it from someone else." Then I recited Surah An-Nisa, until when I reached this verse ((Fakayfa idha ji'na)) (An-Nisa: 41), I raised my head or someone nudged me so I raised my head and saw that the tears were flowing from the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them) says that I was in Homs when people asked me to recite the Qur'an to them. I recited Surah Yusuf. A person said, "By Allah! It was not revealed like this." I said, "Woe to you! By Allah! I recited this Surah before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said, 'You have recited well.'" In short, while I was talking to him, I smelled alcohol from him. I said, "You drink alcohol and deny the Book of Allah? You will not leave until I administer the prescribed punishment to you." Then I flogged him (with the prescribed lashes for drinking alcohol).
Severity of differing about the Qur'an
`Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that one day I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) early in the morning. He (peace be upon him) heard the voices of two men who were arguing about a verse, so he (peace be upon him) came out and anger was apparent on his face. He (peace be upon him) said: The people before you were destroyed because of disputing about the Book of Allah (which is when done out of selfishness, corruption, or to mislead people. But investigating the meaning and deriving religious rulings is correct. [Nawawi] ).
Narrated by Sayyiduna Jundub bin Abdullah Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Recite the Qur'an as long as your hearts are in agreement with your tongues, and when there is a difference between your hearts and your tongues, then get up (stop reciting).
