It is narrated from Abu Jamrah (may Allah have mercy on him) that I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) saying in response to a sneeze: «عافانا الله وإياكم من النار، يرحمكم الله» . May Allah save us and you from the Fire, and may Allah have mercy on you.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a man sneezed and said «الحمد للہ» , so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him «يرحمك الله» . Then another man sneezed, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not say anything to him. So he said: O Messenger of Allah! You replied to him but you did not reply to me when I sneezed. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "He praised Allah and you remained silent."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he says that two men sneezed in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) responded to one of them but did not respond to the other. The one to whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not respond said, "You responded to him but not to me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He praised Allah, but you did not praise Allah."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that two men were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), one of whom was more honorable than the other. The more honorable one among them sneezed and did not say «الحمد لله» , so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not respond to him. The other sneezed and said «الحمد للہ» , so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him «يرحمك الله» . Upon this, the honorable man said: "I sneezed in your presence but you did not respond to me, and you responded to him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "He remembered Allah, so I remembered him; and you forgot Allah, so I forgot you."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he sneezed and «يرحمك الله» was said to him, he would say: May Allah have mercy on us and on you, and may He forgive us and you as well.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: When any one of you sneezes, he should say «الحمد للہ رب العالمین» , and the one who responds should say «يرحمك الله» , then the one who sneezed should say: «يغفر الله لي ولكم» May Allah forgive me and you as well.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him), he said that a man sneezed in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: «يرحمك الله» . When he sneezed again, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "He has a cold."

Makhool Azdi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I was sitting beside Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) when a man sitting in the corner of the mosque sneezed. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: «يرحمك الله» if you have said «الحمد للہ» .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) that the son of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) — Abu Bakr or Umar — sneezed and said: "Aab." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "What is 'Aab'? 'Aab' is the name of one of the devils, which he has placed between sneezing and «الحمد للہ» ."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a man sneezed, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said «يرحمك الله» , then he sneezed a second time, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "He has a cold."
