Hazrat Mutarrif bin Malik narrates that I was with Hazrat Abu Musa Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) at the conquest of Tustar. At the place of Susa, we found the grave of Hazrat Daniyal (peace be upon him). It was the custom of the people of Susa that when a drought befell them, they would seek rain through him. We found with him sixty jars whose mouths were sealed. We opened one jar from the bottom, one from the middle, and one from the top, and in each jar there were ten thousand dirhams. Along with this, we found two bundles of cotton cloth and a cupboard of books. The first to attack was a man from Bal‘anbar whose name was Harqus. Hazrat Abu Musa gave him two bundles and two hundred dirhams. Later, when these two bundles were asked back from him, he refused to return them and cut them up to make turbans for his companions. The narrator says that in this battle, there was a Christian laborer with us whose name was“Nu‘aim.”He said,“Sell me this cupboard.”He was told,“If there is no gold, silver, or the Book of Allah in it, then take it.”When it was checked, the Book of Allah was found in it. Therefore, the people disliked selling the book and sold the cupboard to him for two dirhams and gifted him the book. Hazrat Qatadah says that after this, the sale of manuscripts (mushafs) began to be considered disliked because Hazrat Ash’ari and his companions had considered it disliked. Hazrat Abu Tamimah says that Hazrat Umar wrote a letter to Hazrat Abu Musa instructing him to wash the grave of Hazrat Daniyal with water of lote tree and sweet basil, and to perform his funeral prayer, because he had prayed that only Muslims would be his heirs.
