Sayyiduna Abdullah Ghafqi narrates: Once the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) ate something and then said,“Hang a curtain for me so that I may take a bath!”I asked him,“Are you in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity)?”The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied,“Yes!”Later, I informed Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) about this, so he went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said,“He has reported that you ate and drank in a state of janabah.”The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied,“Yes! When I perform ablution, I can eat and drink, but I cannot recite (the Qur’an) until I have taken a bath.”
