Ata bin Yasar narrates from a companion that once a man was praying while his lower garment was hanging below his ankles. The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: Go and perform ablution. So he went and performed ablution and came back, but the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, again said: Go and perform ablution again. So he went and performed ablution and came back. The people asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is it that you have ordered him to perform ablution? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, at first remained silent, but then said: He had let his lower garment hang down, and Allah Almighty does not accept the prayer of a person who lets his lower garment hang down.
