Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi’ah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a Badri companion, narrates: He says,“O my beloved son Abdullah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to send us in the army, and our provisions were only in leather bags. It was distributed in such a way that each one would get a handful, and then it came to the point where each would get only one date.”The son said,“O my father! How could one date suffice you?”He said,“My child! Do not say such a thing. When even that was not available, we would feel the need for even that.”
