Benefits and Rulings from Hadith No. 30 in Sunan Ibn Majah
Benefits and Rulings by Maulana Ataullah Sajid – Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 30

Benefits & Rulings:

➊ Fabricating a lie means inventing something and falsely attributing it to the Prophet (peace be upon him), presenting it as a hadith. This is a very grave sin.

➋ From this, hadith scholars have inferred the ruling that if there arises a need to mention a weak hadith, the listeners should be informed that it is weak. However, this reasoning is not entirely valid because there is no certainty regarding a weak hadith — whether the Prophet (peace be upon him) actually said it or if the narrator mistakenly attributed it to him.

➌ The phrase “prepare his place in Hell” means that such a person will certainly enter Hell. He must be fully aware that, due to this sin, a place in Hell has already been assigned to him. However, if he sincerely repents and publicly admits that certain hadiths he narrated were fabricated, there is hope that his sin will be forgiven. Nevertheless, even after repentance, the hadith scholars do not accept narrations from such an individual.

➍ This hadith is mutawatir (mass-transmitted). Hafiz Ibn al-Salah (may Allah have mercy on him) stated that it was narrated by sixty-two Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), including the ten promised Paradise (al-‘Asharah al-Mubashsharah).
