Introduction
باب في فَضْلِ الْعِلْمِ وَالْعَالِمِ:
Chapter: The Virtue of Knowledge and the Scholar
Hadith Number: 359
اخبرنا اخبرنا إسماعيل بن ابان، حدثنا يعقوب هو القمي، عن عامر بن إبراهيم، قال: كان ابو الدرداء رضي الله عنه إذا راى طلبة العلم، قال: "مرحبا بطلبة العلم، وكان يقول: إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم اوصى بكم".
It is narrated from ‘Amir bin Ibrahim that when Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the seekers of knowledge, he would say «مرحبا بطلبة العلم» “Welcome to the seekers of knowledge,”and he would say:“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made a bequest regarding you.”

Hadith Number: 360
اخبرنا عبد الله بن يزيد، حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن زياد بن انعم، عن عبد الرحمن بن رافع، عن عبد الله بن عمرو رضي الله عنهما، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، مر بمجلسين في مسجده، فقال: "كلاهما على خير، واحدهما افضل من صاحبه، اما هؤلاء فيدعون الله، ويرغبون إليه، فإن شاء اعطاهم، وإن شاء منعهم، واما هؤلاء فيتعلمون الفقه والعلم، ويعلمون الجاهل، فهم افضل، وإنما بعثت معلما"، قال: ثم جلس فيهم.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by two circles in his mosque and said: "Both are upon goodness, but one gathering is superior to the other. One group of people is supplicating and beseeching Allah Almighty; if He wills, He grants them, and if He wills, He withholds from them. The other group is learning knowledge and understanding of religion and teaching the ignorant, so they are superior. And I too have been sent as a teacher." The narrator said: Then he (the Prophet) also sat with them.

Hadith Number: 361
اخبرنا عبد الله بن يزيد، حدثنا المسعودي، عن عون بن عبد الله، عن مطرف بن عبد الله بن الشخير، انه قال لابنه: "يا بني، إن العلم خير من العمل".
Mutarrif bin Abdullah al-Shakhir said to his son: Son! Knowledge is better than action.

Hadith Number: 362
اخبرنا عبد الله بن يزيد، حدثنا حيوة، اخبرنا شرحبيل بن شريك، انه سمع ابا عبد الرحمن الحبلي، يقول: "ليس هدية افضل من كلمة حكمة، تهديها لاخيك".
Shurahbil bin Sharik heard Abu Abdur Rahman Hubli saying: There is no gift better that you give to your brother than the gift of a word of wisdom.

Hadith Number: 363
اخبرنا عبد الله بن عمران، حدثنا يحيى بن يمان، حدثنا محمد بن عجلان، عن الزهري، قال: "فضل العالم على المجتهد مئة درجة، ما بين الدرجتين خمس مئة سنة، حضر الفرس المضمر السريع".
Imam Zuhri, may Allah have mercy on him, said: The superiority of a scholar over a mujtahid is a hundred degrees, and between each two degrees is a distance of five hundred years covered by swift, well-trained horses. (A "muzzammar" is a horse that is prepared for racing.)

Hadith Number: 364
اخبرنا اخبرنا عبد الله بن يزيد، حدثنا حيوة، قال: اخبرني السكن بن ابي كريمة، عن عكرمة مولى ابن عباس، عن ابن عباس: يرفع الله الذين آمنوا منكم والذين اوتوا العلم درجات سورة المجادلة آية 11، قال: "يرفع الله الذين اوتوا العلم على الذين آمنوا بدرجات".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): By «﴿يَرْفَعِ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ ....﴾» [المجادلة: 11/58] is meant those people of knowledge whose ranks Allah Almighty will raise above the believers.

Hadith Number: 365
اخبرنا بشر بن ثابت البزار، حدثنا نصر بن القاسم، عن محمد بن إسماعيل، عن عمرو بن كثير، عن الحسن، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "من جاءه الموت وهو يطلب العلم ليحيي به الإسلام، فبينه وبين النبيين درجة واحدة في الجنة".
Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If a person dies while seeking knowledge for the revival of Islam, then there will be only one rank of difference between him and the Prophets."

Hadith Number: 366
اخبرنا محمد بن حميد، حدثنا مهران، حدثنا ابو سنان، عن ابي إسحاق، عن عمرو بن ميمون، قال: "ذهب عمر بثلثي العلم"، فذكرت لإبراهيم، فقال:"ذهب عمر بتسعة اعشار العلم".
Amr bin Maymun (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took two-thirds of knowledge. Amr said this was mentioned to Ibrahim Nakha'i, so he said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took nine out of ten parts of knowledge.

Hadith Number: 367
اخبرنا اخبرنا بشر بن ثابت، اخبرنا شعبة، عن يزيد بن ابي خالد، عن هارون، عن ابيه، عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنه، قال: "ما اجتمع قوم في بيت من بيوت الله، يتذاكرون كتاب الله ويتدارسونه بينهم، إلا اظلتهم الملائكة باجنحتها، حتى يخوضوا في حديث غيره، ومن سلك طريقا يبتغي به العلم، سهل الله طريقه إلى الجنة، ومن ابطا به عمله، لم يسرع به نسبه".
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Whenever people gather in one of the houses of Allah, recite (repeat) the Book of Allah, and teach it to others, the angels cover them with their wings until they become engaged in other matters. And whoever sets out on the path to acquire knowledge, Allah makes the path to Paradise easy for him. And whoever's deeds fall short, his lineage (family) will be of no benefit to him.

Hadith Number: 368
اخبرنا عمرو بن عاصم، حدثنا حماد هو ابن سلمة، عن عاصم، عن زر، قال: غدوت على صفوان بن عسال المرادي، وانا اريد ان اساله عن المسح على الخفين، فقال: ما جاء بك؟، قلت: ابتغاء العلم، قال: الا ابشرك؟، قلت: بلى، فقال: رفع الحديث إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وقال: "إن الملائكة لتضع اجنحتها لطالب العلم، رضا بما يطلب".
It is narrated from Dhirr that I went to Safwan bin Assal al-Muradi (because) I wanted to ask him about wiping over leather socks. He said: What has brought you to me? I said: The pursuit of knowledge. He said: Shall I not give you glad tidings? I said: Please do. So he narrated, attributing it to the Prophet (peace be upon him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, the angels spread their wings for the seeker of knowledge, being pleased with what he seeks."
