Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that I prefer to swear nine times that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was martyred, rather than swear once that he was not martyred, and the reason for this is that Allah made him His Prophet and also declared him a martyr.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Surah Nasr was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he began to frequently make this supplication: «سُبْحَانَكَ اللّٰهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ اللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ» "O Allah! Then he drew some other lines to its right and left and said, "These are different paths, upon each of which there is a devil calling towards it." After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: «﴿وَأَنَّ هَذَا صِرَاطِي مُسْتَقِيمًا فَاتَّبِعُوهُ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا السُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمْ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ﴾» [الأنعام: 153] "This is My straight path, so follow it, and do not follow other paths, for you will be separated from His path."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that in the beginning, we used to talk and greet each other during prayer, and would inform each other as needed. One day I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and greeted him, but he did not reply. Various thoughts, both new and old, surrounded me. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished the prayer, he said, "Allah gives whatever new command He wishes. Thus, Allah has now revealed this new command that you should not talk during prayer."
