Musnad of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith Number: 4375
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned to them on the night of the jinn, he had with him a bone, black clay, dung, and coal. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you go to the toilet, do not use any of these things for cleaning yourselves."

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I was present with Sayyiduna Miqdad bin Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) — and being his companion was more beloved to me than all other things. He went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and, after cursing the polytheists, said: O Messenger of Allah! By Allah! We will not say as the Children of Israel said to Musa (peace be upon him):“You and your Lord go and fight, we are sitting here.”Rather, we will fight on your right, your left, in front of you, and behind you, until Allah grants you victory.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that Surah Mursalat was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the night of the snake. We asked him, "What is meant by the night of the snake?" He replied, "Once, at night, we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the cave of Hira when suddenly a snake came out from the mountain. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to kill it. We quickly advanced, but it outpaced us and entered its hole. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Leave it, it has escaped your harm just as you have escaped its harm.'"

Abdur Rahman bin Yazid says that once I stood with Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in front of Jamrah Aqabah. He stood there and said: By Allah, besides whom there is no deity, it was at this very place that the one upon whom Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed stood while performing the stoning. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) threw seven pebbles at it, saying takbeer with each pebble, and then returned.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Before me, whenever Allah sent a prophet to any community, He also appointed disciples and companions for him from among his community who would act upon the prophet’s way (sunnah) and follow his commands. But after them, there would come some unworthy people who would say what they did not do themselves, and would do things that they had not been commanded to do."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were sitting near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with about eighty Qurayshi men—there was no one from any tribe other than Quraysh among them. By Allah! I have never seen the bright side of men's faces more beautiful than I saw on that day among those people. During the conversation, the topic of women came up and people began to talk about women. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also participated in the conversation with them. Then I wished that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would become silent, so I came before him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) noticed and after reciting the testimony (the words of shahada), he said: "As for what follows! O group of Quraysh! You are the people worthy of this leadership as long as you do not disobey Allah. When you become involved in disobedience to Allah, then Allah will impose upon you a person who will strip you just as this branch is stripped."—At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a branch in his blessed hand. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stripped it, and it turned out to be white, solid, and smooth from inside.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once during the Makkan period, we were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) along with a few companions. During this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“One of you should come with me, but only that person in whose heart there is not even a particle of pride.”Upon hearing this, I stood up to go with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and took with me a vessel which, according to my assumption, contained water. I set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). As we walked, when we reached the upper part of Makkah, I saw a large crowd of black people. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) drew a line and said to me,“Stand here until I return.”So I stood in my place, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went towards them. I saw that they were advancing towards the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with great enthusiasm. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had a long conversation with them throughout the night, and at dawn, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to me and said:“O Ibn Mas’ud! Have you been standing since then?”I replied: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! It was you who told me,“Stand here until I return.”Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked me,“Do you have water for ablution?”I replied: Yes! Now, when I opened the vessel, it contained nabidh (a drink made from dates). I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! By Allah! When I took this vessel, I thought it contained water, but it has nabidh in it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“It is fine dates and purifying water,”and performed ablution with it. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up to pray, two men came and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! We wish that you lead us in prayer as well. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made them stand in a row behind him and led us in prayer. When the prayer was finished, I asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Who were these people? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“These were the jinn of Nusaybin. They had come to me to have some of their disputes settled. They also asked me for provisions for their journey, which I gave them.”I asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Did you have anything that you could give them as provisions for the journey? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“I gave them dung. Whatever droppings they find, it becomes food for them, and whatever bones they find, meat appears on them.”For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade using dung and bones for istinja (purification).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught me the Tashahhud for the middle and end of the prayer, and when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would sit on his left buttock in the middle or at the end of the prayer, he would say: «التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلّٰهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللّٰهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ» "All verbal, physical, and bodily acts of worship are for Allah alone. O Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Peace be upon you, and may Allah's mercy and blessings descend upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is Allah's servant and His Messenger." Then, if it was the middle of the prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would stand up after reciting the Tashahhud, and if it was the end of the prayer, after the Tashahhud, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would supplicate for whatever he wished, then he would say the Salam.
