It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'minin Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that in the days of ignorance, the Quraysh used to fast on the tenth of Muharram, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also used to fast on this day. After migrating to Madinah, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) continued to fast on this day and instructed his companions (may Allah be pleased with them) to fast as well. Then, when the fasting of the month of Ramadan was made obligatory, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began to fast only in Ramadan and abandoned the fast of Ashura. Now, whoever wishes may fast, and whoever wishes may leave it.

It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not fast in any month of the year more than he did in Sha'ban, to the extent that he would fast almost the entire month of Sha'ban, and he used to say: "Do as much of deeds as you are able, for Allah will not get tired, but you will surely get tired." And the most beloved prayer to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was that which was performed regularly, even if it was little in amount. And whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed a prayer, he would make it a regular practice.

It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that, by Allah, sometimes a whole month would pass over the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him) in such a way that no fire would be lit in any of the houses of the Prophet (peace be upon him), except that a little meat might come from somewhere, and for our sustenance there were only two things: water and dates. However, there were some households of the Ansar living around us—may Allah reward them with goodness—who used to send the milk of their goat to the Prophet (peace be upon him) every day, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) would drink it.
