Chapter on the Prophet's prayer in Witr
Hadith Number: 261
It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray eleven rak'ahs at night, one of which was witr. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished, he would lie down on his right side.

It is narrated from Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman bin Awf that he asked Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Ramadan. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Whether in Ramadan or outside of Ramadan, he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not pray more than eleven rak‘ahs. He would pray four rak‘ahs—do not ask about their excellence and length—then he would pray another four rak‘ahs—do not ask about their excellence and length. Then he would pray three rak‘ahs. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), do you sleep before praying Witr? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied:“O Aisha! My eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep.”

It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to pray thirteen rak'ahs at night, and then when he heard the call to prayer for Fajr, he would pray two light rak'ahs.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he spent a night at the house of his maternal aunt, Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the wife of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I lay down across the width of the bed, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his wife lay along its length. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slept until, when half the night had passed, or a little before or a little after, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up. He sat up and began to rub his eyes with his hand, then he recited the last ten verses of Surah Al-Imran, that is, from «﴿إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لَآيَاتٍ لِأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ﴾» to the end of the surah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to a water-skin that was hanging and performed ablution from it thoroughly, then stood up and began to pray. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I also stood up and did as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had done. When I came to him, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his right hand on my head and took hold of my right ear and began to twist it. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then prayed witr, then lay down. When the mu’adhdhin came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two light rak‘ahs, then went out and led the morning prayer.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: I will certainly observe the night prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Sayyiduna Zaid, may Allah be pleased with him, says: I leaned against the threshold of his house, or the house which was covered with hair. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up and prayed two rak'ahs, very long, very long, very long.
