On the Prohibition of Riba (Usury)

٢٣٤٠٨ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا جرير عن اشعث عن جعفر عن سعيد بن جبير: ﴿الذين ياكلون الربا لا يقومون إلا كما يقوم الذي يتخبطه الشيطان من المس﴾ [البقرة: ٢٧٥]، قال: يبعث يوم القيامة مجنونا (يخنق) (١).

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him), in the commentary of the Holy Qur'an verse { الَّذِینَ یَأْکُلُونَ الرِّبَا لاَ یَقُومُونَ إلاَّ کَمَا یَقُومُ الَّذِی یَتَخَبَّطُہُ الشَّیْطَانُ مِنَ الْمَسِّ }, states that these people will be raised as madmen on the Day of Resurrection and their throats will be strangled.

٢٣٤٠٩ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا شبابة قال: حدثنا شعبة عن عون بن ابي جحيفة عن ابيه قال: لعن النبي ﷺ آكل الربا ومؤكله (١).
ريفرينس و تحكيم الحدیث:
(١) صحيح؛ أخرجه البخاري (٢٠٨٦)، وأحمد (١٨٧٦٨).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Juhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed both the one who takes usury and the one who gives it.

٢٣٤١٠ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا ابن إدريس عن اشعث وداود عن الشعبي قال: خطب عمر فحمد الله واثنى عليه ثم قال: إنا نامركم باشياء لعلها لا تصلح لكم، وننهاكم عن اشياء لعلها (١) تصلح لكم، وإن آخر ما عهد إلينا النبي ﷺ ⦗٢٣١⦘ (آيات) (٢) الربا، فقبض النبي ﷺ (ولم) (٣) يبينهن (لنا) (٤)، إنما هو الربا (والريبة) (٥) فدعوا [ما يريبكم إلى ما لا يريبكم (٦).

(١) في [أ، ب، هـ]: زيادة (لا).
(٢) في [أ، هـ]: (آية).
(٣) سقط من: [ز].
(٤) في [أ، هـ]: (لكم)، وفي [ز]: (لهم).
(٥) في [أ، ح، ط]: (الربية).
(٦) منقطع فيه ضعف، الشعبي لم يسمع من عمرو، أخرجه أحمد (٢٤٦)، وابن ماجه (٢٢٧٦)، والطبري (٣/ ١١٤).
Hazrat Sha’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon, praised Allah Almighty, and then said: Indeed, I command you regarding some things which may not be beneficial for you, and I forbid you from some things which may be beneficial for you. Indeed, the last covenant that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took from us was concerning the verse of usury. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world and did not explain its details to us. Indeed, this is also usury and also doubtful. Therefore, leave the doubtful thing and choose the one that is not doubtful. Hazrat Sha’bi was asked about something, and he replied that this is usury and also doubtful, so leave the things that involve usury and those that lead to doubt.

٢٣٤١١ - فكان الشعبي إذا سئل عن الشيء، قال: إنما هو الربا والريبة فدعوا] (١) (الربا) (٢) و (المريبات) (٣).

(١) سقط ما بين المعكوفين من: [أ، ح، ط، هـ].
(٢) سقط من: [جـ].
(٣) في [أ، ح، ط]: (الربيات)، وفي [س]: (المربيات).
23411 - So whenever al-Sha‘bi was asked about something, he would say: It is only usury and doubt, so leave [usury] (1) (usury) (2) and (doubtful matters) (3).

٢٣٤١٢ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا ابن إدريس عن عيسى بن المغيرة الشعبي قال: قال عمر: لقد خفت ان يكون قد زدنا في الربا عشرة اضعافه مخافته (١).

(١) منقطع، الشعبي لم يسمع من عمر.
Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I fear that while avoiding usury, we may end up committing ten times more sins.

٢٣٤١٣ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا ابن إدريس عن حصين عن الشعبي قال: (دفع) (١) عبد الله بن يزيد الانصاري إلى غلام له اربعة آلاف، فلحق باصبهان فاتجر حتى صارت عشرين الفا، ثم هلك، فقيل له: (إنه) (٢) كان (يقارف) (٣) الربا، ⦗٢٣٢⦘ فاخذ اربعة الاف وترك ما سوى ذلك (٤).

(٣) في [أ]: (تفارق)، وفي [ح]: (يفارق)، وفي [ط]: (تقارن)، وفي [هـ]: (يقارب).
(٤) صحيح.
Hazrat Abdullah bin Yazid Ansari sent his servant with four thousand dirhams; the servant went to Isfahan and engaged in trade until he had twenty thousand dirhams. Then the servant passed away. It was said to Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the servant used to mix usury in the trade. He (may Allah have mercy on him) took back only the original four thousand and left the remaining money, not taking it.

٢٣٤١٤ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا ابن فضيل عن الاعمش عن عمارة عن عبد الرحمن بن يزيد قال: قال عبد الله: الربا بضع وسبعون بابا والشرك مثل ذلك (١).

(١) صحيح.
Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that there are more than seventy doors of usury, and shirk (associating partners with Allah) is also similar to it.
