Supplication When Wearing New Clothes

٣١٧٣٧ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال: اخبرنا اصبغ بن زيد حدثنا ابو العلاء عن ابي امامة قال: لبس عمر بن الخطاب ثوبا جديدا فقال: الحمد لله الذي كساني ⦗٣٣٢⦘ ما اواري (به) (١) عورتي، واتجمل به في حياتي، [(ثم) (٢) قال: سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول:"من لبس ثوبا جديدا فقال: الحمد لله الذي كساني ما اواري به عورتي، واتجمل به في حياتي] (٣)، ثم عمد إلى الثوب الذي (اخلق) (٤) -او قال- القى، فتصدق به كان في كنف الله وفي حفظ الله وفي ستر الله حيا وميتا قالها ثلاثا" (٥).

(٥) مجهول؛ لجهالة أبي العلاء، أخرجه أحمد (٣٠٥)، والترمذي (٣٥٦٠)، وابن ماجه (٣٥٥٧)، والحاكم ٤/ ١٩٣.
Hazrat Abu Umamah narrates that when Hazrat Umar bin Khattab wore new clothes, he recited this supplication: Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with garments by which I cover my private parts and with which I adorn myself in my life. Then he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Whoever wears new clothes and recites this supplication: Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with garments by which I cover my private parts and with which I adorn myself in my life, and then gives away his old clothes, which he has torn or, as he said, set aside, as charity, then he will remain under Allah’s protection, support, and concealment in his life and after his death. The Prophet said this three times.

٣١٧٣٨ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن ابن ابي ليلى عن اخيه عيسى عن عبد الرحمن بن ابي ليلى قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ:"إذا لبس احدكم ثوبا جديدا فليقل: الحمد لله الذي كساني ما اواري به عورتي واتجمل به في الناس" (١).

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any one of you wears new clothes, he should supplicate as follows: Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with such garments with which I cover my private parts and obtain adornment in my life.

٣١٧٣٩ - حدثنا ابن إدريس عن ابي الاشهب عن رجل من مرينة ان رسول الله ﷺ راى على عمر ثوبا غسيلا (فقال: جديد ثوبك هذا؟ قال: غسيل) (١) يا رسول الله، قال: فقال (٢) رسول الله ﷺ:"البس جديدا، وعش حميدا، وتوف شهيدا، يعطك الله قرة عين في الدنيا والآخرة" (٣).

(٢) في [هـ]: زيادة (له).
(٣) منقطع، والرجل المزني مجهول، أخرجه ابن سعد ٣/ ٣٢٩، والدولابي في الكنى ١/ ١٠٩.
A man from the tribe of Muzainah narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Umar wearing washed clothes, so he said: Are these clothes of yours new? Umar replied: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they are washed. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Wear new clothes, live a life of gratitude, and die as a martyr. May Allah grant you the coolness of the eyes in this world and the Hereafter.

٣١٧٤٠ - حدثنا حسين بن علي عن ابي وهب عن منصور عن سالم بن ابي الجعد قال: (إذا لبس) (١) الإنسان الثوب الجديد فقال: اللهم اجعلها ثيابا مباركة نشكر فيها نعمتك، ونحسن فيها عبادتك، ونعمل فيها بطاعتك، لم يجاوز ترقوته حتى يغفر له.

Hazrat Mansur narrates that Hazrat Salim bin Abi Al-Ja'd said: When a person wears new clothes and recites this supplication: O Allah! Make these clothes blessed. Let me wear them in gratitude for Your blessings. Let me treat Your servants well while wearing them. Let me act in obedience to You while wearing them. Before this supplication even reaches his throat, Allah Almighty forgives him.

٣١٧٤١ - حدثنا محمد بن بشر (١) حدثنا مسعر قال: حدثنا عون بن عبد الله قال: لبس رجل ثوبا جديدا فحمد الله، فادخل الجنة او غفر له (٢) فقال له رجل: (لا ارجع) (٣) إلى اهلي حتى البس ثوبا جديدا (واحمد) (٤) الله عليه.

Hazrat Mas'ar narrates that Hazrat Awn bin Abdullah said: When a person wears new clothes and thanks Allah, he will be admitted to Paradise, or he said: his sins will be forgiven. So a man said to him: I will not return to my family until I wear new clothes and thank Allah for them.

٣١٧٤٢ - حدثنا إسماعيل بن علية عن الجريري عن ابي نضرة قال: كان اصحاب النبي ﷺ إذا راوا على احدهم الثوب الجديد قالوا: تبلي ويخلف الله (١) (٢).

(٢) جيد، أخرجه أبو داود (٤٠٢٠)، والبيهقي في الدعوات (٤٣٢)، والشعب (٦٢٨٤)، وأبو الشيخ في أخلاق النبي ﷺ (٢٥٢).
Hazrat Abu Nadrah says that when the companions of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw someone wearing new clothes, they would pray in this way: Wear and tear, may Allah grant you more.

٣١٧٤٣ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال: اخبرنا الجريري عن ابي نضرة (١) قال: كان رسول الله ﷺ إذا لبس ثوبا جديدا سماه باسمه إن كان قميصا او إزارا او عمامة يقول: اللهم لك الحمد انت كسوتني هذا، اسالك من خيره وخير ما صنع له، ⦗٣٣٤⦘ واعوذ بك من شره وشر ما صنع له (٢).

(٢) مرسل؛ أبو نضرة تابعي، فيه ضعف، ذكره أبو داود (٤٠٢٢)، وأخرجه النسائي في الكبرى (١٠١٤٢)، وأخرجه متصلًا: أحمد (١١٢٤٨)، وأبو داود (٤٠٢٠)، والترمذي (١٧٦٧)، والبغوي (٣١١١)، وابن سعد ١/ ٤٦٠، وابن حبان (٥٤٢١)، والطبراني في الدعاء (٣٩٨)، والحاكم ٤/ ١٩٢، وأبو يعلى (١٠٧٩).
Hazrat Abu Nadrah narrates that when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wore a new garment, he would mention its name—whether it was a shirt, a lower garment, or a turban—and would recite this supplication: O Allah! All praise is for You, for You have clothed me with this garment. I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of that for which it was made, and I seek refuge with You from its evil and the evil of that for which it was made.
