Some Opinions Regarding Cowardice and Bravery

٣٤٧٩٨ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا إسرائيل عن ابي إسحاق عن حارثة بن مضرب عن علي قال: لقد رايتنا يوم بدر ونحن نلوذ برسول الله ﷺ وهو اقربنا إلى العدو وكان من اشد الناس يومئذ باسا (١).

(١) صحيح؛ أخرجه أحمد (٦٥٤)، والنسائي (٨٦٣٩)، والحاكم ٢/ ١٤٣، وأبو يعلى (٣٠٢)، وابن أبي عاصم في الجهاد (٢٥١)، وابن عساكر ٤/ ١٤، والبغوي في التفسير ١/ ١٤٤، والحارث (٩٣٨/ بغية)، والبيهقي في الدلائل ٣/ ٢٥٨، وابن جرير في التاريخ ٢/ ٢٣.
Hazrat Haritha bin Mudarrib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On the day of the Battle of Badr, I saw myself that we were seeking protection through the person of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the closest to the enemy among all of us. And on that day, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was the fiercest warrior of all.

٣٤٧٩٩ - حدثنا ابو اسامة عن زكريا عن ابي إسحاق عن البراء قال: كنا إذا احمر الباس نتقي به، وإن الشجاع للذي يحاذي به (١).
ريفرينس و تحكيم الحدیث:
(١) صحيح؛ أخرجه مسلم (١٧٧٦).
Hazrat Abu Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the battle would become extremely fierce, we would seek protection with the person of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And surely, the brave one is only he who stands face to face with the enemy.

٣٤٨٠٠ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا سفيان عن ابي إسحاق عن حسان بن (فائد) (١) العبسي قال: قال عمر: الشجاعة والجبن (غرائز) (٢) في الرجال، فيقاتل الشجاع عمن يعرف ومن لا يعرف، ويفر الجبان عن ابيه وامه (٣).

(١) في [أ، ب]: (قائد).
(٢) في [أ، ب]: (عن أثر).
(٣) مجهول؛ لجهالة حسان بن فائد، أخرجه سعيد ١/ (٢٥٣٤) و ٢/ (٦٤٩)، وابن عساكر ٤٤/ ٣٥٩، وابن عبد البر في الاستذكار ٥/ ١١٦.
Hazrat Hassan bin Faid Al-Absi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Bravery and cowardice are traits found among men. A brave person fights with someone whether he knows him or not. And a coward runs away even from his own parents.

٣٤٨٠١ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا سفيان ومسعر عن عبد الملك بن عمير عن قبيصة ابن جابر قال: قال عمر: الشجاعة والجبن (سمة) (١) او خلق في الرجال، فيقاتل الشجاع عمن لا يبالي ان (لا) (٢) (يؤوب) (٣) إلى اهله، ويفر الجبان عن (ابن) (٤) ابيه وامه (٥).

(١) في [أ، ب، جـ]: (شمة).
(٢) سقط من: [هـ].
(٣) في [هـ]: (يؤب).
(٤) سقط من: [ط، هـ].
(٥) صحيح.
Hazrat Qabeesah bin Jabir (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Bravery and cowardice are traits or habits found among men. A brave person fights without concern for whether he will return to his family, while a coward flees from the son of his own mother and father.

٣٤٨٠٢ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا اشعث عن عبد العزيز بن صهيب قال: كان رسول الله ﷺ اشجع الناس واسخى الناس (١).
ريفرينس و تحكيم الحدیث:
(١) مرسل؛ عبد العزيز تابعي، وورد من حديث عبد العزيز عن أنس، أخرجه الخلال في السنة (٢٣٢)، وابن عساكر ٤/ ٢١، وأبو الشيخ في أخلاق النبي (١١٠).
Hazrat Abdul Aziz bin Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the bravest and the most generous of all people.

٣٤٨٠٣ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا إسرائيل عن جابر عن ابي جعفر قال: كان رسول الله ﷺ شديد البطش (١).
ريفرينس و تحكيم الحدیث:
(١) مرسل، ضعيف؛ أبو جعفر وجابر ضعيفان، أخرجه ابن سعد ١/ ٤١٩.
Hazrat Abu Ja'far (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was a very powerful person.

٣٤٨٠٤ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا إسماعيل عن قيس قال: سمعت خالد بن الوليد يقول: لقد انقطع في يدي يوم مؤتة تسعة اسياف وصبرت صفيحة يمانية (١).

(١) صحيح؛ أخرجه البخاري (٤١٥٦)، وابن حبان (٧٠٨٩).
Hazrat Qais (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I heard Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed (may Allah be pleased with him) saying that on the day of the Battle of Mu'tah, nine swords broke in my hand, and in the end, I remained patient with a broad Yemeni sword.

٣٤٨٠٥ - حدثنا عبد الرحيم بن سليمان عن (هاشم) (١) بن هاشم قال: سمعت سعيد بن المسيب يقول: كان سعد بن مالك اشد المسلمين باسا يوم احد (٢).

(٢) مرسل؛ سعيد تابعي.
Hazrat Hashim bin Hashim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I heard Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) say: Hazrat Sa’d bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was the fiercest warrior among the Muslims on the day of the Battle of Uhud.
