Hazrat Hisham narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out towards Hudaybiyyah. The incident of Hudaybiyyah took place in the month of Shawwal. The narrator says: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out until, when he reached the place of Usfan, a man from Banu Ka'b met him and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We have left the Quraysh in such a state that they have gathered their various people against you and are not feeding Khazir (a mixture of meat and flour). Their intention is to prevent you from reaching the House of Allah." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out until he came out of Usfan, and the spies of Quraysh, Khalid bin Walid, met him, and on the way, they encountered the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to the companions): "Come here!" So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went between two trees and left the main road until he reached Ghameem.
2. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) settled in Ghameem, he addressed the people. He praised Allah Almighty and glorified Him as is His due. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "To proceed! Verily, the Quraysh have gathered their scattered groups against you and have started feeding them Khazir (a special mixed food). Their intention is to prevent us from reaching the House of Allah. So inform me of your opinion: Do you want to go towards the leaders (i.e., the people of Makkah) to confront them, or do you want to go towards their supporters to confront them so that we may send them back to their women and children? If they sit, they will sit in a state of helplessness and defeat. And if they demand (to confront) us, they will make a weak and soft demand, then Allah Almighty will disgrace them."
3. Hazrat Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Our opinion is that we advance towards the leaders, because Allah Almighty is your helper and supporter and will grant you victory." Hazrat Miqdad bin Aswad said—while he was in his saddle—"By Allah! O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We will not say to you as the Children of Israel said to their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that { اذْہَبْ أَنْتَ وَرَبُّکَ فَقَاتِلاَ، إِنَّا ہَاہُنَا قَاعِدُونَ } rather, we will say: You and your Lord go and fight, and we will fight along with you."
4. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out until, when he reached near the Haram and entered its boundaries, his camel, Jad‘a’, sat down. The people said, "This camel has become stubborn." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! The camel has not become stubborn, nor is it her habit to do so, but she has been stopped by the One who stopped the elephants from Makkah." (Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said) "(If) the Quraysh invite me for the sanctity of the sacred things, they will not surpass me in this action." (The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to the companions) "Come here." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took the path to the right of the hill called Dhat al-Hanzal until he reached Hudaybiyyah. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) camped there, the people began to draw water from a well. Not all the people had drunk their fill when the well dried up. The people complained of this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took an arrow from his quiver and said: "Plant this arrow in the well." The people planted the arrow in the well, and the well began to gush with water and its water rose up until the people drank their fill.
5. When the Quraysh heard of this, they sent the brother of Banu Hulis to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)—he was from the people who honored the sacrificial animals. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Make the sacrificial animals stand." So when he saw the sacrificial animal...

It is narrated from Hazrat Marwan that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him... the year when the polytheists prevented him, peace and blessings be upon him... that year he set out, and when he, peace and blessings be upon him, reached Hudaybiyyah, he, peace and blessings be upon him, was forcibly stopped in the area of Hil, while his intention, peace and blessings be upon him, was to pray in the Haram. When the people wrote the agreement and finished writing it, the people became very disheartened by this decision. The narrator says: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O people! Sacrifice (your animals), shave your heads, and become lawful (i.e., come out of Ihram). No one stood up. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said this again, but still no one stood up. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went to Hazrat Umm Salamah and said: What is your opinion about the state the people have reached? She replied: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! Go and sacrifice your offering, shave your head, and become lawful. The people will also become lawful. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sacrificed (his animal), shaved his head, and became lawful.

It is narrated from Hazrat Bara that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was prevented from (visiting) the House of Allah, the people of Makkah made a treaty with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the condition that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would enter Makkah (the following year) and stay there for three days, and that he would bring only the bags of weapons, in which there would be swords and armor... and he would not take anyone from the people of Makkah with him, and he would not prevent anyone among those who were with him from staying there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Write the agreement between us. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. These are the conditions upon which Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), has made peace." The polytheists said: If we considered you the Messenger of Allah, we would have followed you, but (since we do not accept this) write instead: Muhammad, son of Abdullah. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to erase the previous phrase. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No! By Allah, I will not erase it. Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Show me the place. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) showed him the place, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) erased that phrase. And (in its place) wrote: son of Abdullah. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Makkah for three days (the following year). When the third day came, the polytheists said to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): This is the last day according to the condition of your companion, so tell him to leave Makkah. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) conveyed this to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left.

It is narrated from Hazrat Bara bin Azib that when we camped on the day of Hudaybiyyah, we found its well in such a state that those before us had already drunk from it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on the edge of the well, and he asked for a bucket of water from it. He took some of that water into his blessed mouth and then rinsed it back into the bucket, and prayed to Allah. Then the water of that well increased so much that all the people were able to drink their fill from it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ata that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out to perform Umrah in the month of Dhu al-Qa'dah. A group of Muhajirin and Ansar were with him. Until he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Khaybar. Then people from the Quraysh came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) to turn him back from the House of Allah. During this, there was a harsh conversation and dispute between them. It was close that they would fight each other. The narrator says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a pledge (bay'ah) from his companions under a tree. The number of companions was one thousand five hundred. This day is called the Day of Bay'at al-Ridwan. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) made a truce with the Quraysh. The Quraysh said: We make peace with you on the condition that you slaughter the sacrificial animals here and shave your heads and return. And when you come next year, we will allow you to stay in Makkah for three days. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted this. The narrator says: Then the people set out towards 'Ukaz and stayed there for three days. The polytheists also set the condition that you (peace and blessings be upon him) will not enter Makkah with any weapons except swords. And if anyone from the people of Makkah wants to go with you, you will not take him with you. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered the sacrificial animal at that place and had his head shaved and returned. When the same days came the following year, he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Makkah and brought several camels with him, and many people were with him. When these people entered Masjid al-Haram, Allah the Exalted revealed these words: { لَقَدْ صَدَقَ اللَّہُ رَسُولَہُ الرُّؤْیَا بِالْحَقِّ، لَتَدْخُلُنَّ الْمَسْجِدَ الْحَرَامَ إِنْ شَائَ اللَّہُ آمِنِینَ } The narrator says: Allah the Exalted also revealed this verse: { الشَّہْرُ الْحَرَامُ بِالشَّہْرِ الْحَرَامِ وَالْحُرُمَاتُ قِصَاصٌ، فَمَنِ اعْتَدَی عَلَیْکُمْ فَاعْتَدُوا عَلَیْہِ بِمِثْلِ مَا اعْتَدَی عَلَیْکُمْ } That is, if they fight you in Masjid al-Haram, then you also fight them. Thus, Allah the Exalted made it lawful for you that if they fight the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Masjid al-Haram, then you also fight them in Masjid al-Haram. Abu Jandal bin Suhail bin Amr came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was tied up, and his father had tied him. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned him to his father.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions came after the treaty that took place between the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the polytheists. The narrator says: The polytheists were present near the Bab al-Nadwah adjacent to the Black Stone and were conversing among themselves that weakness and frailty had afflicted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions. So when the companions performed Istilam, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the companions: These people are saying among themselves that weakness and frailty have afflicted you. Therefore, perform Ramal in three circuits so that they may see that you are strong. The narrator says: When the companions performed Istilam, as soon as they lifted their feet, they began Ramal. Upon this, some of the polytheists said to others: Was it not your opinion that weakness and frailty had afflicted them? Yet these people are not content with merely walking unless they run.

It is narrated from Hazrat Majma’ bin Jariyah that I was with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at Hudaybiyyah. So when we returned from Hudaybiyyah, the people began to drive their camels at a fast pace. Then some companions asked others,“What has happened to the people?”They replied,“Revelation has descended upon the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).”The narrator says: Then we too, along with the people, hurried our mounts until we found the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) standing by a mountain called Kara’ Ghamim. So when the desired people had gathered near him, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: {إنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَک فَتْحًا مُبِینًا } One of the companions of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) submitted,“O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Is this victory?”The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Yes! By Him in Whose hand is my soul, indeed this is victory.”The narrator says: Thus, this victory was distributed among the people of Hudaybiyyah in eighteen shares. The army numbered fifteen hundred, and three hundred among them were horsemen, and each horseman received two shares.

Hazrat Iyas bin Salamah narrates from his father that we set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the expedition of Hudaybiyyah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed one hundred animals. Our number was seventeen hundred, and they had preparations of weapons, men, and horses. Among the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) animals was also a camel. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) camped at Hudaybiyyah, the Quraysh made a peace agreement with him on the condition that the sacrificial animals would be made lawful (i.e., slaughtered) at the place where they had been stopped.

It is narrated from Hazrat Sahl bin Hunaif that we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. If our opinion had been for fighting, we would have fought. This was during the truce that took place between the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the polytheists. Hazrat Umar bin Khattab came and presented himself before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! Are we not upon the truth and are they not upon falsehood? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Why not! Then Hazrat Umar asked: Will not our slain be in Paradise and their slain in Hell? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Why not! Hazrat Umar said: Then why are we returning after saying such a lowly thing? Has Allah not yet decided between us and them? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O son of Khattab! I am the Messenger of Allah. Allah will never let me be lost. The narrator says: Then Hazrat Umar could not be patient and left in a state of anger and went to Hazrat Abu Bakr and said: O Abu Bakr! Are we not upon the truth and are they not upon falsehood? Hazrat Abu Bakr said: Why not! Hazrat Umar asked: Will not our slain be in Paradise and their slain in Hell? Hazrat Abu Bakr said: Why not. Hazrat Umar said: Then why are we going back after saying such a lowly thing about our religion, and Allah has not yet decided between us and them? Hazrat Abu Bakr said: O son of Khattab! He is the Messenger of Allah and Allah will never let him be lost. The narrator says: Then the Qur'an was revealed to the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the promise of victory, so he, peace and blessings be upon him, sent a man to Hazrat Umar and (after calling him) recited this Qur'an to him. Hazrat Umar said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! Is this victory? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Yes! Upon this, Hazrat Umar's heart was pleased and he returned.
