Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Imam has been appointed so that he may be followed; when he says the takbir, you should also say the takbir, and when he recites (Qur'an), you should remain silent."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The imam has been appointed so that he may be followed; when he says the takbir, you should also say the takbir, and when he recites (the Qur'an), you should remain silent." Imam Abu Abdur Rahman has narrated this. Makhrami says, this person is trustworthy, meaning the narrator named Muhammad bin Sa'd is (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The imam has been appointed so that he may be followed. Do not differ with him. When he says the takbir, you also say the takbir, and when he recites, you remain silent. When he says 'ghayril maghdubi 'alayhim wa la-d-dallin', you say 'Ameen'. When he goes into ruku', you also go into ruku'. When he says 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah', you say 'Rabbana lakal hamd'. When he goes into sajdah, you also go into sajdah. When he performs the prayer sitting, then all of you also perform the prayer sitting." The narrator of this narration, Isma'il bin Aban (may Allah have mercy on him), is weak.

This narration is also transmitted with another chain from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator of this narration, Abu Sa'd al-Saghani, is weak.

Imam Sha'bi narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will be no recitation behind the Imam." This narration is mursal.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: "Should I recite (Qur'an) behind the Imam or should I remain silent?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You should remain silent, that will be sufficient for you." In narrating this tradition, the narrator named Ghassan is unique, and he is weak, while the other two narrators of this narration, Qais and Muhammad bin Salim, are also weak. The previously mentioned 'mursal' narration is more authentic than this. And Allah knows best.

Hattan bin Abdullah Raqashi narrates: Once, Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) led us in prayer. Sayyiduna Abu Musa informed us: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lead us in prayer, he would teach us. He (peace be upon him) said: "The imam has been appointed so that he may be followed; when he says the takbir, you should also say the takbir; when he recites (Qur'an), you should remain silent." Shaykh Abu Hamid dictated this narration to us in this brief manner. The narrator of this narration, Salim bin Nuh, is not reliable.

Hattan bin Abdullah Raqashi narrates: We offered the Isha prayer under the leadership of Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him). After that, he mentioned a lengthy hadith in which these words are found: "The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to us. He taught us the method of prayer and explained his Sunnah before us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Establish your rows (i.e., keep them straight), then let one of you lead you in prayer. When he says the takbir, you also say the takbir. When he recites (the Qur'an), you remain silent.'"

This narration is also transmitted through some other chains, however, some narrators have reported these words in it: "And when he recites (the Qur'an), you remain silent."

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the Imam recites 'ghayril maghdubi 'alayhim walad-dallin', then you remain silent."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The recitation of the Imam will suffice for you, whether he recites in a low voice or in a loud voice." The narrator of this narration, Asim, is not reliable. Narrating this report as a marfu' hadith is an error.
