Nafi' reports: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) gave his wife a divorce during her menstruation. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him about this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Tell Abdullah to take his wife back. When she has performed ghusl (i.e., becomes pure), he should leave her as she is until she menstruates again. Then, when she has performed ghusl after the next menstruation (i.e., becomes pure), he may divorce her before having intercourse with her. If he wishes to keep her, he may keep her. This is the method about which Allah has commanded that women should be divorced according to it." Ubaydullah reports: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar gave his wife a divorce during her menstruation, but he gave the divorce contrary to the Sunnah method.

Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: He divorced his wife while she was in her menstrual period. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about its ruling. He said: "Abdullah has divorced his wife while she was in her menstrual period." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Tell Abdullah to take her back and keep her with him until she becomes pure from this menstruation. Then, when she gets her next menstruation and becomes pure after it, at that time, if he wishes, he may divorce her before having intercourse with her, and if he wishes, he may keep her with him. This is the method about which Allah has commanded that women should be divorced according to it."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A man came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said,“I divorced my wife while she was in her menstrual period.”The narrator named Ibn Sa’id reports: A man said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him),“I pronounced divorce to my wife while she was in her menstrual period.”After this, both narrators have transmitted these words: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“You have disobeyed your Lord, and your wife has become separated from you.”The man said,“When Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) separated from his wife, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not instruct him to take his wife back.”The narrator named Ibn Sa’id has transmitted these words:“When Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) separated from his wife during her menstrual period (i.e., divorced her), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him to take her back.”After this, both narrators have transmitted these words: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to that man,“The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed him (i.e., Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) to take his wife back because of the divorce that still remained (i.e., which Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, still had the right to give).”The narrator named Ibn Sa’id has transmitted these words:“He took her back on the basis of the divorce for which he still had the right, and you did not leave that thing remaining, on the basis of which you could take your wife back.”The narrator named Ibn Mani’ has transmitted these words:“For you, that thing does not remain, on the basis of which you could take your wife back.”Shaykh Abu al-Qasim narrated to us: This narration has been transmitted by several narrators, but they did not mention these words of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); to my knowledge, no one except Sa’id bin Abdur Rahman has transmitted this statement.
