From Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), a narration similar to this is reported from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when this verse was revealed: "You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love," (the narrator is unsure whether this verse is being mentioned:) "Who is it that will lend Allah a goodly loan," then Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! I have a garden in such-and-such place, I give it in charity for the sake of Allah. If I could have given it secretly, I would not have announced it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Distribute it among the poor people from your family and close relatives."

The same narration is transmitted with another chain, however, in it these additional words are present: So Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) assigned it to Sayyiduna Ubayy ibn Ka'b and Sayyiduna Hassan ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), because these two gentlemen were closer relatives to Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) than I was.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when this verse was revealed: "You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love," Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Our Lord has asked us for our wealth, so I make you a witness that I dedicate my land in Bairuha for the sake of Allah. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Distribute it among your close relatives." So Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) distributed that land between Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit and Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! To me, the best wealth is that land whose yield is one hundred wasq, which you granted me in Khaybar." So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Keep the original land with you and give its produce in charity." The narrator says: So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had this written: "This is from Umar bin Khattab, regarding the land of 'Shamgh' and about those one hundred wasq which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted me, which are in Khaybar. I will keep its original with me and give its produce in charity, which will go to close relatives, orphans, the needy, travelers, and the one who supervises it. The supervisor may eat from it himself and may feed a friend from it; there will be no sin upon him. However, this land cannot be sold, nor gifted, nor inherited, as long as the heavens and the earth remain." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) made this bequest to his daughter, Sayyidah Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her), and then if she passed away, this bequest would transfer to another person of sound judgment from the family of Sayyidah Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to give his land in charity, which was in Shamgh. This matter was mentioned to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace be upon him) said: "Keep the original land with you and give its produce in the way of Allah."

Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have acquired a piece of land which is the best I have ever obtained, and I wish to give it in charity." So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Give it as charity in such a way that the original land cannot be sold, nor given as a gift, nor inherited, and its produce should be spent (in the way of Allah)." The narrator says: So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave it as charity in this manner, and he had it written in the document of charity that it may be given in the way of Allah (i.e., to the warriors in Allah’s cause), to guests, travelers, the poor, and close relatives. Whoever is the caretaker of this land, if he eats from it in a reasonable manner or feeds a friend from it, there is no harm and no sin upon him.
