Malik bin Umair says: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sa’sa’ah bin Sawhan came to him, greeted him with salam, and then stood up and said: O Commander of the Faithful! For whatever the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade you, forbid us from it as well. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from using gourds as vessels, green jugs, tar-coated vessels, and wooden vessels made by hollowing out date-palm trunks. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from silk clothing, red silk cushions, silk, gold rings, and signet rings. Sayyiduna Ali said: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a suit of silk; I wore it and went outside so that people could see the garment the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had given me, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me and ordered me to take it off. Then he sent one part of it to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and distributed the other part among his other women.
