Abdullah narrated to us, Amr al-Naqid narrated to me, al-Hajjaj ibn Abi Mani’ al-Rusafi narrated to us, my grandfather Ubaydullah ibn Abi Ziyad narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Hisham informed him, from Marwan ibn al-Hakam, that Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad ibn Abd Yaghuth informed him, from Ubayy ibn Ka’b informed him, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, the like of it.

Abdullah narrated to us, he said: Suwayd ibn Sa'id narrated to us, al-Walid ibn Muhammad al-Muqari narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, who said: I heard Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman, who said: I heard Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad ibn Abd Yaghuth, who said: I heard Ubayy ibn Ka'b, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: ... then he mentioned it, and he did not mention Marwan in it ...

Abdullah narrated to us, he said: And Abu Ma'mar narrated to me, Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Marwan ibn al-Hakam, from Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad ibn Abd Yaghuth, from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he mentioned the hadith. Abu Abd al-Rahman said: Thus Abu Ma'mar narrated it to us, from Ibrahim ibn Sa'd, and he said in it: from Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad. And Abu Ma'mar differed from the narration of those who narrated it from Ibrahim ibn Sa'd, because a number narrated it from Ibrahim ibn Sa'd, and they said in it: from Abdullah ibn al-Aswad.

It is narrated from Hazrat Suwaid (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I went out with Zaid bin Suhan and Salman bin Rabee’ah. When we reached the place of ‘Adheeb, I found a whip lying on the way. Both of them said to me,“Throw it away,”but I refused. Upon reaching Madinah Munawwarah, I met Hazrat Ubayy bin Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned this incident to him. He said that during the blessed era of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I once found one hundred dinars lying on the way. I asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he said,“Announce it for one year.”I kept announcing for one year, but I did not find anyone who could identify it. (I then presented myself again, and) the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again ordered me to announce it for another year. (Finally,) he said,“Keep in mind its amount, its wrapper, and its binding well, and announce it for another year. If its owner comes, very good; otherwise, you may benefit from it.”

It is narrated from Hazrat Suwaid (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I set out for Hajj with Zaid bin Suhan and Salman bin Rabee'ah... Then the narrator mentioned the entire hadith and at the end said: He said, keep in mind its quantity, its wrapper, and its binding well, and announce it for another year. If its owner comes, very good; otherwise, you may benefit from it.

Bahz narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us. And Abdullah narrated to us, he said: Ibrahim ibn al-Hajjaj al-Naji narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Suwayd ibn Ghafalah, he said: I performed Hajj along with Zayd ibn Suhan and Salman ibn Rabi'ah, and he mentioned the hadith, he said: So I recognized it for two or three years, he said: "Recognize its number, its container, and its tie, and benefit from it, but if its owner comes and recognizes its number and its tie, then give it to him."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was in the mosque when a man came and started reciting the Qur'an in a way that I did not know. Then another man came and he also recited it in a different manner. We all gathered and went to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and I said, "O Messenger of Allah! This man came to the mosque and recited the Qur'an in a way that amazed me, then this other one came and he also recited it differently." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked both of them to recite, so both of them recited and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approved of their recitation. On that day, the doubts that came into my mind regarding Islam had never come before. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), seeing this, struck his hand on my chest, which removed all those doubts, and I was overwhelmed and felt as if I was seeing Allah Almighty before me. Then the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Jibreel and Mika'il (peace be upon them) came to me. Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) said, 'Recite the Holy Qur'an on one letter.' I sent a message to my Lord to make it easy for my Ummah. In this way, it continued until it reached seven letters, and Allah sent me a message to recite it on seven letters, and for each time, you may ask Me for one request, I will grant it." So I asked twice for the forgiveness of my Ummah, and I kept the third thing for that day when all creation, even Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him), will come to me.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was near a well of Banu Ghifar when Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) appeared and said, "Your Lord commands you to teach your Ummah the Holy Qur'an on one letter." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "I seek pardon and forgiveness from Allah, for my Ummah does not have the strength for this." So Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) came again with the message and permission to recite on two letters. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave the same reply again. The third time, the same happened. The fourth time, Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) came with the message to recite on seven letters and said, "Whichever letter they recite accordingly, they will do correctly."
