Hadith Number: 66
‘Amir bin Sa’d narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him): At the time of the conquest of Makkah, I became ill in Makkah, so ill that I reached the brink of death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have a lot of wealth and my only heir is my one daughter, so may I give away two-thirds of my wealth in charity? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“No.”I said: Half? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“No.”I said: One-third? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Give one-third! And one-third is still much. If you leave your heirs wealthy, that is better than leaving them poor, begging from people. Whatever you spend, you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you put in your wife’s mouth.”I said: O Messenger of Allah! Will I be left behind in my migration? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“You will not be left behind from me. Whatever deed you do, seeking Allah’s pleasure, it will increase your rank and status. Perhaps you will live after me so that many people will benefit from you and many others will be harmed by you.”(Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed):“O Allah, keep the migration of my companions intact and do not turn them back on their heels, but Sa’d bin Khawlah—alas for him.”(Sayyiduna Sa’d, may Allah be pleased with him, says) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed sorrow for him because he died in Makkah. Sufyan, the narrator, says: Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with him) belonged to the“Banu ‘Amir bin Lu’ayy.”

The people of Kufa have complained about you in every matter, to the extent that they have even said you do not lead them in prayer properly. So Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! In leading the Dhuhr and Asr prayers, I do not fall short in following the way of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). I make the first two rak’ahs long and the last two rak’ahs somewhat shorter.
The same narration is also transmitted from Jabir bin Samurah with another chain, however, in it are these words: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Ishaq! This is what I thought about you. The narrator named Sufyan also transmitted these words in it: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) instructed him to present himself before the people, so whenever Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by any tribe, the people praised him, until when he passed by the gathering of“Banu Abs,”a wretched man came before him. The kunya of this man was Abu Sa’dah. He said: I know that this man does not act justly regarding his subjects, does not go out for any military expedition, and does not distribute (the spoils of war) properly. So Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Allah! If he is lying, then lengthen his life, increase his children, afflict him with poverty, and subject him to trials. The narrator named Abdul Malik bin Umair says: I saw him as an old man of great age who used to harass young girls on the road. When he was spoken to about this, he used to say: An old man who is poor and afflicted by trials, he has been struck by the supplication of a righteous man, Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him). There is no trial that he has not been afflicted with.
