It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man stood up towards the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and asked, "Can any one of us pray in a single garment?" So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Does every one of you have two garments?" Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the questioner, "Do you know Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him)? For he prays in a single garment even though (his other) clothes are hanging on the peg." This is the hadith of Sa'id bin Abdur Rahman.

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: By the One in Whose hand is the life of Abu Hurairah, indeed I have seen myself and surely I used to see in the mosque that there was hardly anyone whom I saw praying in two garments, whereas today you pray in two and even three garments.

It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him), and he was asked about the person who prays in only one shirt and does not have an izar (lower garment) on his body. He replied that there is no harm in it as long as it covers the awrah. This is the statement of Amr bin Shu'aib. While Bukair says, Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Indeed, we used to pray in only one garment until Allah Almighty granted us plenty of clothes. Then he said, 'Pray in two garments only.'" So Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "There is no harm in it. We used to pray in only one garment during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), even though we had two garments." Then it was presented to Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was with them. "Will you not decide among these gentlemen?" He replied, "I am with my (position)."

Sayyiduna Amr bin Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) praying in a single garment in the house of Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her); he had turned its edges and placed them over his shoulders.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) praying in a single garment, having turned its edges over his shoulders, while his (other) garment was hanging on a peg.

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the companions used to pray with the Prophet (peace be upon him) with their lower garments tied around their necks like children. So it was said to the women: Do not raise your heads (from prostration) until the men sit up straight. In the narration of Janab Salm bin Junadah, there is an addition:“Because the lower garments were tight and short (the women were instructed not to raise their heads quickly).”

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I was one of the seventy people of Ahl al-Suffah. None of them had a (garment covering the upper part of the body), or they had a striped sheet or a blanket, etc., which they would tie around their necks. Some of them would reach up to the shins and some up to the ankles, so they would gather it with their hands, fearing that their private parts might become exposed. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the name of Abu Hazim Madani, who narrates from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him), is Salamah bin Dinar. And the name of Abu Hazim, who narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), is Salman Ashja’i.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "None of you should ever pray in a single garment in such a state that none of it is on his shoulder." Abdul Jabbar narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and says that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates a marfu' hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

And the evidence that the prohibition of praying in a single garment without anything on the shoulders of the one praying is not applicable if the garment is wide, is that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, permitted praying in a single tight garment if the one praying ties it around his waist.

Hazrat Nafi’ says that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) saw me performing prayer in a single garment, so he said,“Did I not give you two garments to wear?”I replied,“Indeed, you did.”He said,“What do you think, if I were to send you for some task, would you go in just one garment?”I replied,“No.”He said,“Allah Almighty has more right that you adorn yourself for Him.”Then he said,“I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘When any one of you has only one garment, he should tie it around his waist and not wrap himself in it like the Jews.’”Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this narration is also concise and unexplained. The garment which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered to be tied around the waist is a narrow garment, not a loose and wide one. And the narration that explains these two concise hadiths is as follows.
