It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every deed of the son of Adam is for him. The reward of a good deed is given from ten times up to seven hundred times. Allah Almighty says: Except for fasting, it is for Me and I alone will give its reward. The fasting person leaves food for My sake. He leaves drinks for My sake, and he leaves his desires for My sake, and he leaves benefiting from his wife for My sake. And the smell from the mouth of the fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the fragrance of musk. And for the fasting person there are two occasions of happiness: one happiness is when he breaks his fast, and the other happiness he will attain at the time of meeting his Lord."

Hazrat Hanzalah bin Ali narrates that I heard Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) delivering a narration in this Baqi’ that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, and he narrated a narration similar to the one mentioned above. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the chains of narration of Sa’eed al-Maqburi and Hanzalah bin Ali are both authentic. Did you not hear the statement of Maqburi that he says: I and Hanzalah bin Ali were present with Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Baqi’.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id and Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrate that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty says that fasting is for Me and I alone will reward it. For the fasting person there are two occasions of happiness: ① When he breaks his fast, he is happy. ② When he meets Allah Almighty and He gives him reward and recompense, he will be happy. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the smell from the mouth of the fasting person is better and more pleasant to Allah Almighty than the fragrance of musk. Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“In Paradise, there is a special gate for those who fast, which is called Rayyan. No one except those who fast will enter through it. When the last of those who fast has entered, that gate will be closed. Whoever enters Paradise will drink the heavenly drink, and whoever drinks it will never feel thirsty again.”Abu Hazim Salamah bin Dinar is a trustworthy narrator; in his time, there was no scholar like him.

Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in the month of Ramadan, whoever wished would fast and whoever wished would leave the fast, and would feed a poor person as compensation. Until this verse was revealed «‏‏‏‏فَمَن شَهِدَ مِنكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ» ‏‏‏‏ [ سورة البقرة: 185 ] “So whoever among you is present in the month (at home), he should fast in it.”

Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when any of the companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him) was fasting, and the time for iftar (breaking the fast) arrived, if he slept before breaking his fast, then he would not eat anything that night and until the next evening. Sayyiduna Qais bin Sirmah (may Allah be pleased with him) was fasting, and when the time for iftar came, he went to his wife and asked,“Do you have any food?”She replied,“No, but I will go and find some for you.”So she went to get food for him, and Sayyiduna Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) had been working all day, so he fell asleep. His wife came (with the food), and seeing him asleep, said,“Alas, you have missed out.”So he remained in that state until morning. Then, when it was midday, he fainted. This matter was mentioned to the Prophet (peace be upon him), so this verse was revealed «‏‏‏‏أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ لَيْلَةَ الصِّيَامِ الرَّفَثُ إِلَىٰ نِسَائِكُمْ» ‏‏‏‏ [ سورة البقرة: 187 ] “It has been made lawful for you to have relations with your wives on the night of fasting.”The companions were very pleased with this. Then Allah Almighty revealed further in the Qur’an «‏‏‏‏وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ» ‏‏‏‏ [ سورة البقرة: 187 ] “Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread.”
