Abdullah bin Haneen narrates that Sayyiduna Miswar bin Makhramah and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) had a disagreement at the place of ‘Arj regarding whether a person in the state of Ihram can wash his head. On one occasion, the narrator said that there was a disagreement about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) washing his blessed head while in the state of Ihram. So they sent me to ask Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) about this issue. I went to him at the place of ‘Arj and found him bathing between two wooden planks of a well. I greeted him with Salam. When he saw me, he wrapped a cloth around his chest until I could see his chest. I said,“Your nephew, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), has sent me to you to ask how you saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) washing his blessed head while in the state of Ihram.”So he called for a bucket of water, poured some water from it, and let it flow over his head. Then he rubbed his hands over the front and back of his head. And he said,“I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) doing it like this.”Abdullah bin Haneen says that when I informed Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), Sayyiduna Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both),“After this, I will never argue or dispute with you about any issue.”

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had cupping done while in the state of Ihram. Sufyan says that then I heard Amr bin Dinar saying that Tawus informed me, he says that I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) saying that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had cupping done while in the state of Ihram. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in my opinion, Imam Amr bin Dinar narrated this hadith from both Ata and Tawus.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) applied non-fragrant oil while in the state of Ihram. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I fear that Farqad Sabkhi made a mistake in narrating this as a marfu’ (attributing it to the Prophet). Because Imam Sufyan Thawri (may Allah have mercy on him) has narrated from Mansur, from Sa’id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him), that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), when intending to enter Ihram, would apply oil.

Imam Abu Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him, says that to the best of my knowledge, it is correct that in the narration of Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair, the act of applying oil is that of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, and not of the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. And the narrator Mansur (who has attributed this act to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) is a more proficient and reliable scholar and memorizer of hadith than many narrators like Farqad Sabkhi. Similarly, Hajjaj bin Minhal has also narrated from Imam Hammad. Imam Waki’ ibn Jarrah has also narrated (that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) used to apply oil at the time of putting on ihram. Hisham bin Jameel also narrates from Imam Hammad that when he intended to put on ihram, he would apply oil. Imam Abu Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him, says: Therefore, according to the words narrated by Imam Waki’ and Hisham bin Jameel (that at the time of putting on ihram or intending to put on ihram, oil was applied), it is permissible to apply even the best fragrant oil, provided it is applied at the time of intending to put on ihram, because the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, applied the best fragrance mixed with musk at the time of intending to put on ihram. And musk is the highest and finest fragrance, as the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, has stated. (Therefore, oil can be applied at the time of ihram, as narrated by several students of Imam Hammad. Whereas Farqad Sabkhi’s narration of applying oil in the state of ihram as a marfu’ narration is his error.) Muhammad bin Yahya says that the meaning of“ghair muqattat”is“non-fragrant.”
