Chapter: Command to Fight Until They Say La ilaha illa Allah Muhammad Rasul Allah
Hadith Number: 15
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have been commanded (by Allah) to fight the people until they testify that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the true Messenger of Allah, and establish prayer and give zakat. When they do this, they will have protected their lives and property from me, except for the right of Islam. (As for what is in their hearts,) their reckoning is with Allah.

Sayyiduna Musayyib bin Hazn (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when Abu Talib’s time of death approached, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him and found Abu Jahl bin Hisham and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah bin Mughirah present with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Talib,“O uncle, say a word—La ilaha illallah (there is no deity except Allah)—so that I may testify for you with it before Allah, the Exalted.”Upon this, Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah said,“O Abu Talib, will you turn away from the religion of your father, Abdul Muttalib?”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to present the word of Islam to him, and Abu Jahl and Ibn Abi Umayyah kept repeating their statement. Finally, the last thing Abu Talib said was that he was on the religion of Abdul Muttalib, and he refused to say La ilaha illallah. Even then, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“I will continue to seek forgiveness for you until I am forbidden to do so.”Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed the verse:“It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are the companions of Hell.”(At-Tawbah 113)

Then he continued to ride for a while, and after that he said, "O Mu'adh!" I replied, "O Messenger of Allah, I am present and ready to obey you." Then he continued to ride for a while, and after that he said, "O Mu'adh!" I replied, "I am present, O Messenger of Allah, ready to obey you." After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Do you know what right Allah has over His servants?" I replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Allah's right over His servants is that they worship Him alone and do not associate anything with Him." Then he continued to ride for a while, and after that he said, "Mu'adh!" I replied, "I am present, O Messenger of Allah, ready to obey you." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Do you know what right the servants have over Allah when they do this?" I replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "Then the servants' right over Allah is that He does not punish them."
