Narrations Regarding Obedience and Disobedience to the Imam

٣٤٧١١ - حدثنا وكيع بن الجراح قال: ثنا الاعمش عن ابي صالح عن ابي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ:"من اطاعني فقد اطاع الله، ومن اطاع الإمام فقد اطاعني، ومن عصاني فقد عصى الله، ومن عصى الإمام فقد عصاني" (١).

(١) صحيح؛ أخرجه البخاري (٧١٣٧)، ومسلم (١٨٣٥).
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever obeyed me has indeed obeyed Allah. And whoever obeyed the leader has indeed obeyed me. And whoever disobeyed me has indeed disobeyed Allah. And whoever disobeyed the leader has indeed disobeyed me.

٣٤٧١٢ - حدثنا ابن عيينة عن ابي الزناد عن الاعرج عن ابي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ:"من اطاعني فقد اطاع الله، ومن اطاع (اميري) (١) فقد اطاعني" (٢).

Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever obeyed me has indeed obeyed Allah. And whoever obeyed my leader has indeed obeyed me.

٣٤٧١٣ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا الاعمش عن ابي صالح عن ابي هريرة قال: ﴿اطيعوا الله واطيعوا الرسول واولي الامر منكم﴾ [النساء: ٥٩]، قال: الامراء (١).

Hazrat Abu Salih (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) explained the interpretation of this verse as follows: Verse: Translation: Obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you. He said: By this is meant the rulers.

٣٤٧١٤ - حدثنا وكيع ثنا إسماعيل بن ابي خالد قال: سمعت مصعب بن سعد يقول (١): قال علي بن ابي طالب كلمات اصاب فيهن: حق على الإمام ان ⦗٢٠٨⦘ يحكم بما انزل الله، وان يؤدي الامانة، فإذا فعل ذلك كان حقا على المسلمين ان يسمعوا (ويطيعوا) (٢) ويجيبوا إذا دعوا (٣).

(١) في [أ، ب]: زيادة (قال: رسول اللَّه ﷺ).
(٢) في [ب]: (ويصيعوا).
(٣) صحيح؛ أخرجه ابن جرير في التفسير ٥/ ١٤٥، وأبو عبيد في الأموال (١١)، والخلال في السنة (٥١).
Hazrat Mus'ab bin Sa'd (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Abi Talib said a few words and spoke absolutely correctly: That is, it is obligatory upon the Imam to judge according to the Qur'an revealed by Allah, and to fulfill the trust. And if he does so, then it is obligatory upon the Muslims to listen to him and obey him. And when they are called, they should respond to the call.

٣٤٧١٥ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا علي بن صالح عن عبد الله بن محمد بن عقيل عن جابر بن عبد الله: ﴿واولي الامر منكم﴾، قال: اولو الفقه اولو الخير (١).

(١) ضعيف؛ لضعف عبد اللَّه بن محمد بن عقيل.
Hazrat Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in the verse: { وَأُولِی الأَمْرِ مِنْکُمْ }, what is meant are the jurists and the people of virtue.

٣٤٧١٦ - حدثنا ابن علية عن ابن ابي نجيح عن مجاهد في قوله: ﴿اطيعوا الله واطيعوا الرسول واولي الامر منكم﴾، قال: كان مجاهد يقول: اصحاب محمد ﷺ، وربما قال: اولو العقل والفقه في دين الله.
Hazrat Ibn Abi Najeeh (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Hazrat Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) explained the interpretation of this verse as follows: Verse { أَطِیعُوا اللَّہَ وَأَطِیعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَأُولِی الأَمْرِ مِنْکُمْ } Hazrat Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say that most of the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say that those meant are people of intellect and understanding, and those who have comprehension in the religion of Allah.

٣٤٧١٧ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا ابو جعفر عن الربيع بن انس عن ابي العالية قال: العلماء.
Hazrat Rabi’ bin Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Abu Al-‘Aliyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: By“those in authority”is meant the noble scholars.

٣٤٧١٨ - حدثنا وكيع وابو معاوية عن الاعمش عن زيد بن وهب عن عبد الرحمن بن عبد رب الكعبة عن عبد الله بن عمرو قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ:"من بايع إماما فاعطاه صفقة يده وثمرة قلبه، فليطعه ما استطاع" (١).

(١) صحيح؛ أخرجه مسلم (١٨٤٤)، وأحمد (٦٥٠٣).
Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever has pledged allegiance to an Imam, he has given him the grasp of his hand and the love of his heart. Therefore, he should obey him to the best of his ability.

٣٤٧١٩ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا شعبة عن يحيى بن الحصين عن جدته ام الحصين قالت: سمعت النبي ﷺ وهو يخطب بعرفة وهو يقول:"إن امر عليكم عبد حبشي فاسمعوا له واطيعوا ما قادكم بكتاب الله" (١).

(١) صحيح؛ أخرجه مسلم (١٨٣٨)، وأحمد (٢٧٢٧٠).
Hazrat Umm Hissain (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon in the plain of Arafat and said: If even an Abyssinian slave is appointed as your leader, then listen to him and obey him as long as he leads you according to the Book of Allah the Exalted.

٣٤٧٢٠ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا يونس بن ابي إسحاق عن العيزار بن حريث العبدي عن ام الحصين الاحمسية قالت: سمعت النبي ﷺ وهو يخطب (بعرفة) (١) (وعليه) (٢) برد متلفعا به، وهو يقول:"إن امر عليكم عبد حبشي مجدع فاسمعوا له واطيعوا ما قادكم بكتاب الله" (٣).

Hazrat Umm Hissain Ahmiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon in the plain of Arafat while he had wrapped himself in a sheet, and said: Even if a slave of Abyssinian origin with a cut nose is appointed as your leader, listen to him and obey him as long as he leads you according to the guidance of the Noble Qur'an.
