The First Chapter on Its Virtue
Hadith Number: 559
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Tamam bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when people came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "What is the reason that you have come to me in such a state that there is filth and yellowness visible on your teeth? Use the miswak. If there had not been a fear of hardship upon my ummah, I would have made the use of miswak obligatory like wudu."

Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding Siwak at the Time of Prayer
Hadith Number: 560
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I did not fear hardship for my ummah, I would have commanded them to use the miswak with every prayer, and I would have delayed the Isha prayer until the first third of the night. The reason for this is that when the first third of the night passes, Allah Almighty descends to the lowest heaven and remains there until the break of dawn. During this period, a caller continues to say: 'Is there anyone who asks so that he may be given? Is there anyone who supplicates so that he may be answered? Is there any sick person seeking healing so that he may be healed? And is there any sinner seeking forgiveness so that he may be forgiven?'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If I had not feared hardship for my Ummah, I would have ordered them to use the miswak with every prayer." When Sayyiduna Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, would come to the mosque, the miswak would be on his ear like a scribe's pen, and whenever the prayer was established, he would use the miswak before the prayer.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was using the miswak, and the end of the miswak was on his tongue and he was brushing upwards. Hammad (may Allah have mercy on him) described this manner as if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was lifting his miswak, then Hammad (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Ghailan (may Allah have mercy on him) described to us that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to brush with the miswak lengthwise.

Abu Matar (may Allah have mercy on him) says: We were sitting at the Rahbah gate in the mosque with the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), when a man came and said, "Show me the ablution (wudu) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." It was the time of decline (zawal), so he called for Qanbar, his servant, and said, "Bring me a vessel of water." Then he washed his palms and face three times each, rinsed his mouth three times, inserted his finger into his mouth, and put water into his nose three times.
