Chapter on the Mustahadah (Woman with Irregular Bleeding) Following Her Habit and Her Ablution for Every Prayer
Hadith Number: 970
The wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates that during the time of the Prophet, a woman began to bleed. So when Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked for a ruling for her, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: She should observe the number of nights and days in a month during which she used to have her menstruation; when she has completed that duration, she should perform ghusl (ritual bath), tie a cloth around herself, and start performing prayers.

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (RA) that Sayyida Umm Habiba bint Jahsh (RA), who was the wife of Sayyida Abdur Rahman bin Auf (RA), experienced so much bleeding due to istihada that she would not become pure. When her case was presented before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: This is not menstruation; rather, a vein in the womb has been struck. The woman should leave prayer for as many days as her menstruation used to last, and then see how many days (of purity) remain after that. During those days, she should perform ghusl for every prayer and offer it.

Chapter on the Mustahadah Acting According to Distinction
Hadith Number: 972
It is narrated from the wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Aisha (RA), that Sayyida Umm Habiba (RA), who was the wife of Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf (RA), had been experiencing istihada (non-menstrual bleeding) for seven years. When she complained about this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "This is not menstrual blood; it is an issue of a vein. When menstruation comes, then leave the prayer, and when it ends, perform ghusl and then offer the prayer." Sayyida Aisha (RA) says: This lady used to perform ghusl for every prayer and would sit in the tub of her sister, Sayyida Zainab bint Jahsh (RA), to the extent that the redness of the blood would rise over the water.

(Second chain) She says: Sayyida Umm Habibah bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for a legal ruling and said: I experience the blood of istihada (non-menstrual bleeding). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is an issue of a vein, so perform ghusl and pray. So this woman used to perform ghusl for every prayer. Ibn Shihab said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not command her to perform ghusl for every prayer; she did this herself.

Chapter on What the Mustahadah Who Does Not Know Her Habit and Cannot Distinguish Should Do
Hadith Number: 974
It is narrated from Sayyida Hamnah bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: I used to experience excessive and severe istihada (non-menstrual bleeding), so I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to seek a fatwa and to inform him of my issue, and I found him at the house of your sister, Sayyida Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her). I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have something to ask you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is it? I said: O Messenger of Allah! I experience excessive and severe istihada (bleeding), what do you think about it? It has prevented me from prayer and fasting. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I advise you to use cotton, it will stop the blood. I said: The blood is more than that. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then tie a cloth tightly. She said: I am bleeding a lot. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I give you two commands, whichever of them you do will suffice for you, so if you are able to do both, you know best. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is one of the kicks of Satan, so count yourself as menstruating for six or seven days, according to what Allah knows, then perform ghusl (ritual bath) in such a way that you see yourself to be truly pure and clean and you are certain of it, then pray and fast for twenty-three or twenty-four days, this will suffice for you. So do this every month, just as women menstruate and become pure in their times of menstruation and purity. And if you are able to delay Zuhr and hasten Asr, and perform ghusl for them and combine both prayers, and delay Maghrib and hasten Isha, and perform ghusl for them and combine both prayers, and perform a separate ghusl for Fajr and offer it, then do so, and pray and fast. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Of these two commands, this action is more beloved to me.

Chapter on the Evidence of Those Who Say the Mustahadah Should Bathe for Every Prayer if Able, or Combine Two Prayers with One Bath
Hadith Number: 975
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (RA) that Sayyida Salma or Suhailah bint Suhail (RA) was afflicted with the blood of Istihada. She came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked about this matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her to perform ghusl (ritual bath) for every prayer. But when this became difficult for her, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed her to perform one ghusl for Zuhr and Asr together, one ghusl for Maghrib and Isha together, and a separate ghusl for the Fajr prayer.

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a woman suffering from istihada (non-menstrual bleeding) asked about her condition during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Someone told her: "This is a vein that has gone beyond its normal state." Then she was instructed to delay the Zuhr prayer and hasten the Asr prayer and perform one ghusl (ritual bath) for both; and similarly, to delay the Maghrib prayer and hasten the Isha prayer and perform one ghusl for both; and to perform a separate ghusl for the Fajr prayer. Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) also narrates that among the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), there was a woman who suffered from istihada (non-menstrual bleeding). She performed i'tikaf with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while she continued to see yellow and red blood. Sometimes, we would place a basin underneath her while she was praying.
