Sharhabeel bin Bukail says: I said to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them): Some of my relatives live in Egypt, they make wine from grapes. He said: Do any Muslims do this as well? I said: Yes. He said: Do not adopt the ways of the Jews; fat was made unlawful for them, but they sold it and began to eat its price. I said: What is your opinion about a person who takes a bunch of grapes and squeezes it to drink? He said: There is no harm in that. Then when I was leaving, he said: Whatever is lawful to drink, it is also lawful to sell.

Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the day of Badr, he obtained a she-camel from the spoils of war, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also granted him another she-camel. I made both she-camels sit in front of the door of an Ansari's house. My intention was to load them with idhkhir grass and bring it to sell, and to use the money for the walima after marrying Sayyida Fatima. A goldsmith from Banu Qaynuqa was also my partner in this work. Sayyiduna Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) was drinking wine in that house. (When he became intoxicated) he picked up a sword in excitement and cut off the humps of both she-camels, ripped open their sides, and took away their livers and humps. When I saw this scene, I became extremely distressed. I went to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with you. I informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of this incident. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out, and Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) and severely reprimanded him. Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) looked around and said: "You are all slaves of my father." Seeing this, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back on his heels and came out of the house. This incident occurred before the prohibition of wine.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went towards an enclosure, and I was with him. I was on his right side. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came, I moved back, and now he was on the right side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I was on his left side. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, so I moved aside, and now on the left side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the enclosure, and there were some skins in the enclosure in which there was wine. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me to bring a knife, and for the knife, he used the word "mudiyyah." I learned the meaning of this word that day. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered, and the skins were cut open. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Curse has been pronounced upon wine, its drinker, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who squeezes it, the one for whom it is squeezed, and the one who consumes its price.

Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Three types of people will not enter Paradise: one who habitually drinks alcohol, one who severs ties of kinship, and one who affirms magic. And whoever dies while habitually drinking alcohol, Allah Almighty will make him drink from the Ghuta River. Someone asked: What is the Ghuta River? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: It is a river that flows from the private parts of immoral women; the dwellers of Hell will be tormented by the foul smell of their private parts.

Abdullah bin Dailami says: I entered upon Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both), he was in a garden of his in Ta’if called Wahat. Next to him sat a young man from the Quraysh, who was accused of drinking wine. I said: O Abdullah! A hadith has reached me from you that whoever drinks a sip of wine, Allah Almighty does not accept his repentance for forty days, and wretched is he who is wretched from his mother’s womb, and whoever comes to Bayt al-Maqdis, and his coming is only for prayer, then he comes out of his sins as the day his mother gave birth to him. When the young man heard the mention of the punishment for wine, he withdrew his hand from the hand of Sayyiduna Abdullah and left. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I do not allow anyone to attribute to me what I have not said. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever drinks a sip of wine, Allah Almighty will not accept his prayer for forty days. If he repents, Allah Almighty will accept his repentance. If he drinks again, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days. If he repents, Allah Almighty will accept his repentance. If he returns again—I do not remember whether he mentioned the third or fourth time—then he said: If after that he drinks again, it is Allah Almighty’s right to make him drink from a river flowing with the pus of the people of Hell.
