Chapter: "What has been mentioned about its virtue and the time of its revelation"
Hadith Number: 8753
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When Allah Almighty created the creation, the bond of kinship clung to the back of the Most Merciful and said to Allah Almighty: This is the place of one seeking refuge from severing ties of kinship. Allah Almighty said: Are you not pleased that I will join the one who joins you, and I will cut off the one who cuts you off? If you wish, recite these verses: {فَہَلْ عَسَیْتُمْ إِنْ تَوَلَّیْتُمْ أَ نْ تُفْسِدُوْا فِی الْأَرْضِ وَتُقَطِّعُوْا أَ رْحَامَکُمْ، أُولَئِکَ الَّذِینَ لَعَنَہُمُ اللّٰہُ فَأَ صَمَّہُمْ وَأَ عْمٰی أَ بْصَارَہُمْ، أَ فَلَا یَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ أَ مْ عَلٰی قُلُوبٍ أَ قْفَالُہَا} … Then would you perhaps, if you became rulers, cause corruption in the land and sever your ties of kinship? Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed; so He deafened them and blinded their eyes. Do they not then reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there locks upon their hearts?

Narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: During the journey of Hudaybiyyah, we were with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I asked him about a certain matter three times, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not give me any answer. I said to myself in my heart: O son of Khattab! May your mother lose you, three times you insisted on questioning the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but he did not give you any answer. Thinking this, I mounted my ride and moved ahead, fearing that perhaps some revelation might be sent down about me. Suddenly, a caller called out: O Umar! Where is Umar? I turned back, thinking that something had been revealed about me. When I presented myself, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Tonight, a surah has been revealed to me that is dearer to me than the world and whatever is in it, that is: {إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَکَ فَتْحًا مُبِینًا لِیَغْفِرَ لَکَ اللّٰہُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِکَ وَمَا تَأَ خَّرَ} … Indeed, We have given you a clear victory, so that Allah may forgive you your past and future sins.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from Hudaybiyyah, these verses were revealed: { إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَکَ فَتْحًا مُبِینًا۔ لِیَغْفِرَ لَکَ اللّٰہُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِکَ وَمَا تَأَ خَّرَ وَیُتِمَّ نِعْمَتَہُ عَلَیْکَ وَیَہْدِیَکَ صِرَاطًا مُسْتَقِیمًا} … Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory, so that Allah may forgive you your past and future sins, and complete His favor upon you, and guide you to the straight path. The Muslims said: O Messenger of Allah! Congratulations to you for what Allah has granted you, but what is there for us? In response to them, this verse was revealed: {لِیُدْخِلَ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِی مِنْ تَحْتِہَا الْأَ نْہَارُ خَالِدِینَ فِیہَا وَیُکَفِّرَ عَنْہُمْ سَیِّئَاتِہِمْ وَکَانَ ذٰلِکَ عِنْدَ اللّٰہِ فَوْزًا عَظِیمًا} … So that Allah may admit the believing men and believing women to gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide therein forever, and remove from them their sins; and that is, with Allah, a great success.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, eighty (80) armed men from among the people of Makkah advanced towards the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his noble companions from the direction of the mountain of Tan‘eem. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invoked a curse upon them, so they were captured. Upon this, the following verse was revealed: { وَہُوَ الَّذِی کَفَّ أَیْدِیَہُمْ عَنْکُمْ وَأَ یْدِیَکُمْ عَنْہُمْ بِبَطْنِ مَکَّۃَ مِنْ بَعْدِ أَنْ أَ ظْفَرَکُمْ عَلَیْہِمْ} … He it is Who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them in the midst of Makkah after He had given you victory over them.

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were sitting with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) near the root of that tree which Allah Almighty has mentioned in the Holy Qur’an. The branches of that tree were falling on the blessed back of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and the representative of Quraysh, Suhail bin Amr, were in front of him. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): (Write the agreement), write:“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”But Suhail bin Amr held his hand and said: We do not know“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”In our peace agreement, write what we know. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Alright)“In Your name, O Allah.”Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dictated: This is the document upon which Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), made peace with the people of Makkah. But Suhail again held his hand and said: If you are the Messenger of Allah, then we have stopped you and wronged you; we do not accept your Prophethood. Write in our peace agreement what we recognize. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Fine) Write: This is the agreement upon which Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul Muttalib made peace. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Write it, write it, while I am truly the Messenger of Allah and I am also Muhammad bin Abdullah. We were writing the terms of this peace when thirty (30) young men, armed, came before us. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed them; Allah Almighty took away their sight and we advanced and captured them. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them: Are you under anyone’s protection? Has anyone given you safety? They said: No. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) released them, and Allah Almighty revealed this verse: { وَہُوَ الَّذِی کَفَّ أَیْدِیَہُمْ عَنْکُمْ وَأَ یْدِیَکُمْ عَنْہُمْ بِبَطْنِ مَکَّۃَ مِنْ بَعْدِ أَنْ أَ ظْفَرَکُمْ عَلَیْہِمْ وَکَانَ اللّٰہُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِیرًا۔} … He it is Who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them in the midst of Makkah after He had given you victory over them. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.

It is narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, he says: It was near that the two best men of this Ummah, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), would have perished. The incident was that when the delegation of Banu Tamim came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), one of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) suggested that Aqra’ bin Habis Hanzali should be appointed as their leader, while the other proposed another man (Qaqa’ bin Ma’bad). Upon this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Your intention was to oppose me. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, I did not intend to oppose you. Thus, their voices became loud in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so these verses were revealed: {یَا أَ یُّہَا الَّذِیْنَ آمَنُوْا لَا تَرْفَعُوْا أَ صْوَاتَکُمْ … … عَظِیمٌ} Ibn Abi Mulaykah narrates that Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: After this, when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he would speak like a confidant, to the extent that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would ask him to repeat what he had said.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed: {یٰٓاَیُّہَا الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا لَا تَرْفَعُوْٓا اَصْوَاتَکُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِیِّ وَلَا تَجْہَرُوْا لَہ بِالْقَوْلِ کَجَـہْرِ بَعْضِکُمْ لِبَعْضٍ اَنْ تَحْبَطَ اَعْمَالُکُمْ وَاَنْتُمْ لَا تَشْعُرُوْنَ۔} … O you who have believed! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak loudly to him as you do to one another, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not. Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qais bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him), who had a loud voice, said: My voice is louder than the voice of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), my deeds have been wasted, I am among the people of Hell. Thinking this and becoming sad, he sat at home. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) noticed his absence and inquired about him. A man (Sayyiduna Asim bin Adi, may Allah be pleased with him) went to him and said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has noticed your absence and is searching for you, what is the reason? He replied: I am the one whose voice is louder than the voice of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), because of this loudness I am among the people of Hell, all my deeds have been wasted. He came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and conveyed the words of Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, rather he is of the people of Paradise. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: This was our opinion about Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), that although he walked among us, we believed he was of the people of Paradise. When the Battle of Yamama took place and signs of defeat appeared among us, Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qais bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) came, having applied perfume and wearing his shroud, and said: You have set a bad example for your opponents. Then he fought them until he was martyred.

Narrated from Sayyiduna Harith bin Dirar Khuzai (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he invited me to Islam, so I entered the fold of Islam. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) invited me to pay Zakat, and I accepted that as well. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I will return to my people and invite them to Islam and command them to pay Zakat. Whoever accepts my word, I will collect his Zakat and keep it with me. Then, after some time, send your representative to me so that he may bring the Zakat I have collected to you. When Sayyiduna Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) and those who accepted his word had collected the Zakat, and the appointed time had passed in which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had intended to send a representative, that representative was delayed for some reason and could not go. Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) thought that perhaps some displeasure had arisen with Allah and His Messenger regarding him. So he gathered the prominent people of his tribe and said to them: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had told me that he would send a representative to me within this period to collect the Zakat from me, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never breaks his promise. The reason for the delay, in my opinion, is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is displeased. Let us go to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (so that we may find out the reason). Meanwhile, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as promised, had sent Walid bin Uqbah as a representative to Harith so that he could bring the Zakat wealth collected with him. When Walid set out, he became afraid on the way and returned, and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Harith has refused to give me Zakat and has tried to kill me. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a military detachment towards Harith bin Dirar (may Allah be pleased with him). On the other side, Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) was coming with his companions. When they encountered the detachment, which had already left Madinah, they said: This is Harith. When they came near, Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the members of the detachment: Where have you been sent? They said: To you. He asked: Why? They said: The reason is that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Walid bin Uqbah to you, but according to him, you did not give him Zakat and then tried to kill him. Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, by the One Who sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth, I have not even seen him, nor did he come to me. Then when Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: You withheld Zakat and tried to kill my representative. Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, by the One Who sent you with the truth, I have not even seen him, nor did he come to me. I only came when I saw that the representative of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come and was delayed, so I became afraid that perhaps Allah or the Messenger of Allah had become displeased with me. So these verses were revealed: {یَا أَ یُّہَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوْا إِنْ جَائَ کُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَیَّنُوْا … … وَاللّٰہُ عَلِیْمٌ حَکِیْمٌ۔}

Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that someone said to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that if you yourself go to Abdullah bin Ubayy, (perhaps there will be some benefit in it), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) rode a donkey and went to him, and the Muslims were also walking with you (peace and blessings be upon him). The ground was salty, and dust rose as you (peace and blessings be upon him) walked. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached that person, he said: Stay away, by Allah! I am troubled by the smell of your donkey. An Ansari man said: By Allah! The donkey of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is more fragrant than you. Then, one of Abdullah’s supporters became agitated, and on the other side, the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became passionate in his support. The supporters of both sides got into a scuffle, using tree branches, fists, and shoes. We have received that this verse was revealed about them: {وَإِنْ طَائِفَتَانِ مِنْ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ اقْتَتَلُوْا فَأَ صْلِحُوْا بَیْنَہُمَا} … And if two groups of the believers fight each other, make peace between them.
