It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) commanded me to recite the Mu'awwidhat, that is, Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nas, after every prayer. This is a plural word and by it, three surahs (Ikhlas, Falaq, and Nas) are meant.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to me: Recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas, there is nothing like these Surahs that you recite.

Abu Alaa says: A man, that is, Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him), said: We were on a journey with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and due to the scarcity of mounts, people were riding in turns. Then the turn for the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and me to dismount also came. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met me from behind and struck my shoulder and said: Recite {قُلْ أَ عُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ}. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited that Surah and I recited it along with him. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite {قُلْ أَ عُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ}. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this entire Surah and I recited it along with him. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you pray, recite these.

It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Yazid that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) would erase the Mu'awwidhatayn from his mushaf and would say that these are not from the Book of Allah. A'mash says: Asim narrated to us from Zirr that Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about them, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It was said to me, so I said it.

It is narrated from Zir bin Hubaish, he says: I said to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him): Your brother used to scrape these two surahs from the Mushaf, he did not deny this. When Sufyan was asked that by brother is meant Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: Yes, and these two surahs were not in the Mushaf of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he thought that these were two incantations, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform incantations for Sayyiduna Hasan and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) through them. In fact, Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) had not heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recite these surahs in prayer, so he persisted in this opinion, but the rest of the people’s research is that these are part of the Noble Qur'an, therefore they included them in the Noble Qur'an.

Zirr bin Hubaysh says: I said to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) does not write the Mu'awwidhatayn in his mushaf. He said: I bear witness that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed me that Sayyiduna Jibreel (peace be upon him) said to him: {قُلْ أَ عُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ}, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: So I said it. Jibreel said: {قُلْ أَ عُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ}, so I said it. Thus, we also say as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was given a white mule as a gift. He (peace and blessings be upon him) rode it, and Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading it. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Recite. He said: O Messenger of Allah! What should I recite? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite {قُلْ أَ عُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ}. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this surah again, until he (Sayyiduna Uqbah, may Allah be pleased with him) had recited it. But when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that I was not very pleased with this surah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It seems you consider it insignificant; you have not recited a surah like this in prayer (i.e., this is an unparalleled surah to be recited in prayer).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I clung to the blessed feet of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me Surah Hud and Surah Yusuf. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: O Uqbah! You have not recited any surah that is more beloved, eloquent, and fruitful to Allah Almighty than {قُلْ أَ عُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ}. Yazid, the narrator, says: Abu Imran would never abandon the recitation of this surah and would always recite it in the Maghrib prayer.
