It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rode on a donkey, on which there was a saddle and underneath it was a cloth from Fadak, that is, a prepared cloth from the place of Fadak. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) behind him on the donkey. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was going to visit Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) in the tribe of Banu Harith bin Khazraj to inquire about his health. This incident took place before the Battle of Badr. As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was passing by, he came across a gathering in which Muslims, polytheists, idol worshippers, and Jews were sitting together. Among them were Abdullah bin Ubayy and Abdullah bin Rawaha as well. When the dust raised by the donkey reached the gathering, Abdullah bin Ubayy covered his nose with his cloak and said,“Do not scatter dust upon us.”The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted them with peace, stopped, dismounted, and invited them to Allah’s religion and recited the Qur’an before them. Abdullah bin Ubayy said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):“No one’s words are better than yours. If what you say is true, then do not trouble us by coming to our gatherings. Go to your own house, and whoever among us comes to you, you may present these things to him.”Upon this, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawaha (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“O Messenger of Allah! Please do come to our gatherings, we like it.”Or Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawaha (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed Abdullah bin Ubayy and said:“You are stopping him from coming to our gatherings, yet we invite you to our gatherings. You should come to our gatherings, and we like it.”Because of these words, an argument broke out among the Muslims, polytheists, and Jews, to the extent that it almost came to blows. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept trying to calm them down. After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his ride and went to the house of Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) and stayed there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Sa’d! Did you hear what Abu Hubab, that is, Abdullah bin Ubayy, said? He said such and such.”Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) replied:“O Messenger of Allah! Leave him and forgive him. By Allah! Allah has already given you the honor He intended for you. The people of this town, that is, Madinah Munawwarah, were about to crown him and make him their chief, but when Allah made him unsuccessful and deprived him of this through the truth He granted you, he became jealous of you. What he did to you is the result of that, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forgave him.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the expedition of Al-‘Usheirah, I and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) were together. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived there, we saw the people of Banu Mudlij working in an orchard at a spring. So Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me,“Abu al-Yaqzan! What do you think, should we go to them and see how they work?”We went to them and watched their work for a while. Then sleep overcame us. So Ali and I walked to a cluster of date palms and lay down on the ground and slept. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke us up by moving us with his foot. We were both covered in dust. On that day, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) by the nickname“Abu Turab,”because dust was visible on his body. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Shall I not point out to you the two most wretched men?”We said,“O Messenger of Allah! Of course.”He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“The red one of Thamud, who hamstrung the she-camel, and the man who (O Ali!) will strike your head until your (beard) is soaked with blood.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, the people of the tribe of Juhainah came to him and said,“You have now come among us, establish a strong relationship with us so that we may come to serve you and you (peace and blessings be upon him) may also lead us.”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made a firm covenant with them, and they entered the fold of Islam. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us in the month of Rajab; our number was not even a hundred. He commanded us to attack a branch of Banu Kinana settled near the tribe of Juhainah. We attacked them; they were very numerous. We sought refuge among the tribe of Juhainah, and they gave us protection and also said,“Why do you fight in the sacred month?”We said,“We fight those who expelled us from the Sacred Land, that is, the sacred city, in the sacred month.”Hearing this, some of us said to each other,“What do you think now?”Some said,“We should go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and inform him of the situation.”But some people said,“No, no, we should stay here.”And I, along with a few more people, said that we should head towards the caravan of Quraysh and seize it. So we set out towards the caravan. In those days, the custom was that whoever took possession of property, it became his. We set out towards the caravan, and some of our companions went and informed the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of the whole situation. The blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned red, and he stood up angrily and said,“You left from me together and are returning separately. It was this very discord that destroyed those before you. I will send over you a man as your leader who is not better or superior to you, but he can endure hunger and thirst more than you.”Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Jahsh Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) as our leader and sent him. He was the first person to be appointed as a leader in the era of Islam.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, he initially stayed with his Ansari ancestors or maternal uncles and resided there. Upon arriving there, he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prayers facing Bayt al-Maqdis for sixteen or seventeen months, while his heartfelt desire was that his qiblah be the Ka'bah. (After the change of qiblah) the very first prayer that he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed facing the Ka'bah was the Asr prayer. The people also performed the prayer with him. One of those who had performed the prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left from there, and as he passed by some people who were praying in the mosque and were in the state of ruku', he said: "I bear witness by Allah that I have just performed prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) facing Makkah." Those people turned towards the Ka'bah during their prayer. It was also the heartfelt desire of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that his direction be turned towards the Ka'bah (Baytullah), and the Jews liked that he used to perform prayers facing Bayt al-Maqdis and the qiblah of the People of the Book. When his direction was turned towards Baytullah, this did not please them.
