It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when people gathered to give Ghusl (ritual washing) to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), present in the house were his family, his uncle Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib, Sayyiduna Fadl bin Abbas, Sayyiduna Qutham bin Abbas, Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid bin Haritha, and their servant Sayyiduna Salih (may Allah be pleased with them all). When these people gathered to give Ghusl to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), from outside the door, a member of Banu Awf bin Khazraj, Sayyiduna Aws bin Khawli Ansari Badri (may Allah be pleased with him), called out to Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), saying:“O Ali! I beseech you by Allah, we too have a right and share upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).”Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him:“Come inside.”So he came in and was present at the time of the Ghusl of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but he could not participate in giving the Ghusl. The shirt of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained as it was, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) held him to his chest. Sayyiduna Abbas, Sayyiduna Fadl, and Sayyiduna Qutham, together with Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib, would turn the side of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid and their servant Sayyiduna Salih (may Allah be pleased with him) would pour water, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) would give the Ghusl. Normally, in the bodies of the deceased, inappropriate things are seen, but nothing of the sort was seen in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) would continue to give Ghusl and say:“May my parents be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), how pure you are in your life and after your life.”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was given Ghusl with water mixed with lotus leaves. When they finished giving Ghusl to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they dried his body, then all the actions were performed with him that are done with the deceased, then he was shrouded in three garments, two of which were white and one was a striped sheet. After this, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) called two men, sending one to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and the other to call Sayyiduna Abu Talhah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) Ansari. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to dig graves for the people of Makkah, making box-type (shaqq) graves, and Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to prepare side-type (lahd) graves for the people of Madinah. After sending both of them, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“O Allah! Choose for Your Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) whichever of the two You wish.”Both of them went; the man who went to call Sayyiduna Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) could not find him, and the man who went to call Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) found him, so he brought him along, and he prepared a lahd (side-type) grave for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) stated: When the family intended to bathe the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they disagreed among themselves. They said: By Allah, we do not know what to do. Should we undress the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as we undress our dead men, or should we bathe him with his clothes on? Sayyidah (may Allah be pleased with her) stated: When they disagreed on this matter, Allah Almighty caused drowsiness to overcome all of them, so much so that in their sleep, all their chins rested upon their chests. Then, from a corner of the house, someone spoke to them, and they could not tell who it was. He said: Bathe the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with his clothes on. They quickly went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and bathed him with his shirt on, pouring water and lotus leaves over it, and the men would rub his body over the shirt. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used to say: If I had known then what I learned later, only the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would have bathed him.

Sayyiduna Abu Usayba or Abu Asim (may Allah be pleased with him), who was present at the funeral prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: The Companions said, "How should we offer the funeral prayer for you (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said, "Enter in groups." So they would enter through that door, offer the prayer for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and then leave through the other door. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was placed in the grave, Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that there was some space near the feet of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that needed to be fixed. The Companions said to him, "Go into the grave and fix it." He went inside, put his hand in, and touched the blessed feet of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and at the same time said, "Put soil over me." The Companions put soil over him until it reached halfway up his shins. After that, he came out. He used to say, "Among all of you, I have the honor of being the last to touch the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
