It is narrated from Asim bin Kulayb that an elder from Banu Tamim of the Quraysh related to him, mentioning the names of six or seven elders of the Quraysh, and said that these gentlemen narrated it, among whom was also the name of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: We were sitting with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came. Because of their dispute, their voices were raised very high. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Abbas! Wait a moment, I know what you want to say. You want to say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was your nephew, so you should get half of the wealth. And Ali! I also know what you want to say. You want to say that his daughter is in your marriage and she is entitled to half of the wealth. Listen! Whatever was in the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that is what we all have seen, we know how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to dispose of it. After the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) became the Caliph of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he also disposed of it in the same way as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). After Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), I was appointed as the guardian. I swear by Allah that as far as possible, I will act in the same way. After this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) swore an oath and said that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was truthful. It is narrated from him that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No man inherits from a Prophet; their inheritance is distributed among the poor and needy Muslims. And Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated to me, and by Allah, he was truthful, he narrated that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A Prophet does not pass away until he has led the prayer behind someone from his Ummah. Whatever was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we all have seen how he used to dispose of it. Now, if both of you wish, I will give this wealth to you so that you may also dispose of it as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did. So, both of them separated and then came back, and Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes, you may hand over this wealth to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); I am wholeheartedly pleased in favor of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding this matter.

It is narrated from Iyad Ash'ari, who says: I participated in the Battle of Yarmouk. Five individuals were appointed as commanders over us: Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, Sayyiduna Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan, Sayyiduna Ibn Hasnah, Sayyiduna Khalid ibn Walid, and Sayyiduna Iyad. Here, the Iyad referred to is not the same Iyad from whom Simak narrates hadith, rather, this is another person. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had instructed that when the battle begins, Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) will be your commander. We wrote to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that death is ready to swallow us, and then we requested further reinforcements from him. In reply, he wrote: I have received your letter; you have requested more reinforcements from me. I direct you towards a great power and multitude: seek help from Allah Almighty. On the day of Badr, your numbers were much fewer than now, yet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was helped. When this letter reaches you, begin fighting the enemy and do not request help from me. Iyad says: When we fought the enemy, we defeated them and killed them for twelve miles, and we obtained a great deal of spoils of war. When the people consulted among themselves, Iyad advised us that we should give ten for every head. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Who among you will race me on horseback? A young man said: If you are not displeased, I am present. So he came forward. I saw both of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah’s (may Allah be pleased with him) braids waving in the air. The young man was behind him and was riding an Arabian horse, meaning that the young man remained behind Abu Ubaidah in the race.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A group of Muslims will certainly, certainly conquer the treasures of Kisra. Abu Nu’aim, the narrator, added in his narration: those treasures which are in his white palaces.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon at the place of Jabiyah and said in it: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us just as I am standing among you, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I urge you to treat my companions well, and I advise you to show kindness to those who come after them, and then to those who come after them. After these times, lying will become widespread, to the extent that a man will begin to give testimony before he is asked for it. So whoever among you wishes to secure a place in the middle of Paradise, let him remain with the congregation, for the devil is with the solitary person, and he is farther from two people who are together. And none of you should be alone with a woman, for the third among them will be the devil. Also, when a man's good deed pleases him and his bad deed displeases him, then he is a believer.

It is narrated from Nashirah bin Sami Yazni, who says: I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) at the place of Jabiyah, addressing the people. He said: Allah Almighty has made me the treasurer and distributor of this wealth. Then he said: In reality, Allah Almighty is the One Who distributes. Now, when I distribute, I begin with the family of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then after them, I give to whoever is most virtuous. Thus, he fixed ten thousand for each of the pure wives except for Sayyidah Juwayriyyah, Sayyidah Safiyyah, and Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with them), but when Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to treat us with justice and equality, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave everyone an equal share. Then he said: Now I will first give to those who are among the earliest emigrants, because these people were wronged and oppressed and were expelled from their homes. After them, I will give to those who are people of virtue and honor. Thus, he fixed five thousand for the Companions of Badr, four thousand for the Ansari Badr Companions, and three thousand for the participants of Uhud. Along with this, he said: Whoever hastened in migration will be given more, and whoever delayed in migration, I will give him a lesser share. Every man should blame the place where his camel sat (i.e., if someone is given a lesser share, it is due to his own delay, he should not blame us). And I present an excuse before you regarding Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him)—I had ordered him to distribute this wealth among the weak emigrants, but he distributed this wealth among the healthy, the people of status, and the clever ones. Therefore, I am taking this responsibility from him and handing it over to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Upon hearing this, Abu Umar bin Hafs bin Mughira said: By Allah! O Umar bin Khattab! Your excuse is not acceptable. You have dismissed that official whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had appointed. You have sheathed that sword which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had unsheathed, and you have folded that flag which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had set up, and by doing this, you have severed ties with your cousin and shown envy towards him. Hearing these words, Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You are a close relative of your cousin and young in age, so you are showing partiality towards him.

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi’ah that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab set out for Syria. When he reached the place of Sargh, he received information that an epidemic (of plague) had spread in Syria. Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf (may Allah be pleased with him) informed him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you hear that an epidemic of plague has spread in a region, do not go there, and when you are present in a region and the epidemic spreads there, then do not leave that place out of fear of it. Upon hearing this hadith, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) thanked Allah and returned from the place of Sargh.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I, Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Miqdad bin Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Khaybar to look after our properties. Upon arrival, each of us went to his own property. I was sleeping on my bed at night when I was attacked, and both my arms were pulled by the elbows in such a way that the joints became crooked. When morning came, my two companions were called to me for my help. When they came to me, they said: Who did this to you? I said: I have no idea who they were. They treated my hands and took me to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This is the doing of the Jews. Then he stood among the people to address them and said: O people! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had made an agreement with the Jews of Khaybar that whenever we wish, we can expel them from here. These people have wronged Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and have pulled his hands, as you have come to know, and before this, they have already shown enmity towards the Ansar. Now we are certain that these excesses have been committed by them, because we have no other enemy here. Therefore, whoever has property in Khaybar should go and take care of it; I am about to expel the Jews from Khaybar. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) exiled the Jews from there.

It is narrated from Abu Firas, who says that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the people and said: O people! When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was among us and revelation used to descend upon him, and Allah Almighty used to inform us about your actions, we used to recognize all of you very well. Now the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away and the series of revelation has ended. Now, whatever we say to you, we will try to recognize you in its light. Whoever among you expresses goodness, we will also think good of him and treat him accordingly, and whoever among you expresses evil towards us, we will also think ill of him and bear enmity towards him accordingly. Your secrets and inner matters are between you and your Lord. Beware! A time has passed over me when I used to see someone reciting the Qur'an, I would think that he is reciting for the pleasure of Allah and to attain what is with Allah, and I continued to think this about him till the end. But there are some people who, after reciting the Qur'an, seek compensation and wealth from people. I advise you to intend to seek Allah's pleasure through your recitation and deeds. Beware! By Allah! I do not send my workers and officials to you so that they may punish you, nor do I send them so that they may seize your wealth. My purpose in sending them is that they may teach you your religion and the Sunnah. If any of my officials acts contrary to this, then inform me about him. By the One in Whose hand is my life! I will surely make him pay for his actions. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Commander of the Faithful! What do you think if a Muslim man is appointed as a ruler over some people and he punishes some members of his subjects to teach them discipline, will you also make him pay for that? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes, by the One in Whose hand is Umar's life! I will surely, surely make him pay for that. I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) present himself for retribution. Beware! Do not humiliate and disgrace the Muslims by punishing them, and do not keep them stationed at the borders for too long, for in this way you will put them into trials, and do not deprive them of their rights, otherwise you will make them ungrateful servants, and do not settle the armies in clusters of trees (because in this way they will scatter) and be lost.

It is narrated from Ma’bad bin Abi Talhah Ya’mari, he says: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) stood on the pulpit on Friday, praised and glorified Allah Almighty. After that, he mentioned the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and then said: I have seen a dream, and in my opinion, its interpretation is that now the time of my death is near. I saw that a red rooster pecked me twice. When I narrated this dream before Sayyida Asma bint Umais, the wife of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), she said that some non-Arab man will kill Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: People tell me that I should appoint someone as my successor. Remember, Allah will not let go to waste the religion and caliphate with which He sent His Prophet. If my death comes soon, then this is a council of six persons. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he was pleased with all of them. Whichever of them you pledge allegiance to, listen to him and obey him. I know well that some people will criticize and object in this matter. With these very hands of mine, I have fought against such people for Islam. Such people are enemies of Allah, disbelievers, and misguided. By Allah! Of the commands my Lord has given me and made me caliph, I am not leaving behind anything more important than the matter of kalalah. By Allah! Since I have been in the company of the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he never spoke to me as sternly about any matter as he did about kalalah. Until he (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his blessed finger on my chest and said: For this matter, the last verse of Surah An-Nisa, which was revealed in summer, is sufficient for you. If I remain alive, I will make such a decision about this issue that both the literate and illiterate will know it well. I make Allah a witness regarding the governors and representatives I have sent to various regions, that I sent them so that they may teach people the religion and teach them the Sunnah of the Prophet, and if any matter is not clear to them, they should bring it to me. O people! You eat two plants, that is, garlic and onion. I consider them extremely disliked. By Allah! I used to see the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he would smell their odor from someone, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would order regarding that person, and he would be taken out of the mosque and sent towards the Baqi’ graveyard. Whoever must eat these plants should cook them well. Ma’bad says that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered this address to the people on Friday, and on Wednesday he was attacked.
