The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) separated a woman and her husband because the father had married her off without her permission, and when he (the Prophet) would marry off his daughters, he would come near the curtain and say: "So-and-so is mentioning (proposing to) so-and-so."

A marriage case of a woman was presented before Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), who had been married off by her maternal uncles. He sought confirmation from his daughter, Sayyida Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), and declared the marriage valid, saying: "These people are suitable (kufu')."

A case of a woman was brought before Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), who had been married off by her mother and relatives. He inquired whether the husband had consummated the marriage. When he was informed that he had, he said: "The marriage is valid."

Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) considered valid the marriage of a woman whom her mother had given in marriage with her consent.

A woman came to Hazrat Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) for marriage and her guardian refused. Shurayh said: "The guardian should permit the marriage." And when the guardian hesitated, he himself conducted the marriage.

Ziyad sent Abu Burdah bin Abi Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) over some charities and said: "I place you and myself in the position of a guardian of an orphan regarding this wealth: whoever is rich should abstain, and whoever is poor may eat according to what is customary. If you come across any shighar (exchange marriage), then reject it, and do not approach any woman whom her guardian is withholding until you marry her to someone of her own people who is her equal."

Ziyad sent Sayyiduna Abu Burdah bin Abi Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) over the charities and said: "I place you and myself in the position of a guardian of an orphan, and Allah Almighty has said: «وَمَنْ كَانَ غَنِيًّا فَلْيَسْتَعْفِفْ وَمَنْ كَانَ فَقِيرًا فَلْيَأْكُلْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ» [النساء: 6] . If you come across any shighar (exchange marriage), then reject it, and do not leave any woman whom her guardian prevents (from marriage) until you marry her to someone equal from her people."

A man came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Commander of the Faithful! What is the matter between me and my orphan girl?" He replied: "What are you asking about? Do you yourself wish to marry a wealthy and beautiful woman?" He said: "Yes, by Allah!" He replied: "Then marry someone who is ugly and poor, that will be better for her, and if it is someone else (who wishes to marry her), then give her the choice."

Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah have mercy on him) said to a woman of his household: "I implore you by Allah to marry a Muslim, even if he is a red Roman or a black Abyssinian."

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I married Zaid bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) to Zainab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), and I married Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) to Dubaa’ah bint Zubair bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her), so that people may know that the greatest honor is that of Islam."

Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a marriage proposal for his brother to a family of the Arabs and said: "I am Bilal and this is my brother. We were both slaves, Allah the Mighty and Majestic freed us, and we were astray, Allah the Mighty and Majestic guided us."
