Virtue of knowledge
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that (one day) while the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in a gathering and speaking to the people, a Bedouin came to him and asked, "When will the Hour (Day of Judgment) be established?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply to him and continued speaking. Upon this, some people said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had heard what he said but disliked it and therefore did not answer, while others said that he had not heard it. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished his speech, he said, "Where is the questioner?" I think these were the words after that: "The one who asked about the Hour?" The questioner said, "O Messenger of Allah! Here I am." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "When trust is lost, then await the Hour (i.e., the Day of Judgment is near)." He asked, "How will trust be lost?" He replied, "When matters are entrusted to those who are not qualified, then await the Hour."
Raising voice when teaching knowledge
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that during a journey which we undertook in the company of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Prophet (peace be upon him) lagged behind us. Then he (peace be upon him) met us while we had delayed the prayer and were performing ablution, so (due to haste) we began to pass water over our feet (because washing them takes time). Upon this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) raised his voice and said two or three times: "Woe to the heels from the fire (of punishment)" (i.e., if left dry).
Imam tests companions’ knowledge
Narrated by Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: "Among the trees, there is a tree whose leaves do not fall, and it resembles a Muslim. So tell me, which tree is that?" The people started thinking of the wild trees. Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: It came to my mind that it is the date-palm tree, but I felt shy to say it. Eventually, the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Please tell us which tree it is. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "It is the date-palm tree."
Reading hadith and reciting to scholar
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once we were sitting in the mosque with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came riding a camel. He brought his camel into the mosque, made it sit down, and tied its legs. Then he asked the companions (may Allah be pleased with them), "Who among you is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)?" At that time, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting among the companions (may Allah be pleased with them), reclining on a cushion. So we said, "This fair-complexioned man who is reclining on the cushion (he is Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him)." Then that man said to you, "O son of Abdul Muttalib!" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "(Speak,) I am listening." He said, "I am going to ask you something and I will be a bit harsh in questioning, so do not find it unpleasant in your heart." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Ask whatever comes to your mind." He said, "I ask you by your Lord and the Lord of those before you (tell me the truth), has Allah sent you to all mankind (as a Prophet)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "By Allah! Yes (indeed, I have been sent as a Prophet)." Then he said, "I ask you by Allah (tell me the truth), has Allah commanded you to establish five prayers in the day and night?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "By Allah! Yes." Then he said, "I ask you by Allah (tell me the truth), has Allah commanded you to fast in this month (i.e., Ramadan)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "By Allah! Yes." Then he said, "I ask you by Allah (tell me the truth), has Allah commanded you to take this charity from our wealthy and distribute it among our needy?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "By Allah! Yes." After that, the man said, "I have believed in this (Shariah) which you (peace and blessings be upon him) have brought, and I am the representative sent by those of my people who are behind me, and I am Dhamam bin Tha’labah, belonging to the tribe of Banu Sa’d bin Bakr."
Giving written knowledge to townspeople
‘Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says:’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a letter by the hand of a person and instructed him to deliver this letter to the ruler of Bahrain. (So he delivered it.) And the ruler of Bahrain forwarded it to Kisra (the king of Persia). Then when (Kisra) read it, (out of his wretchedness) he tore it up. (Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both,) says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard this, he invoked a curse upon those people, saying:“They (too) shall be torn to pieces in the same way.”
‘Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that’ when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) intended to write or wrote a letter (to the king of Rome or Persia), it was said to him that those people do not read a letter without a seal (i.e., they do not give it importance). So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had a silver ring made, on which“Muhammad Rasul Allah”was engraved. (Sayyiduna Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, says: It feels as if) I am (even now) looking at the whiteness of it in the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Waqid Al-Laithi (may Allah be pleased with him) that (one day) while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sitting in the mosque and people were sitting with him (to benefit from him), three persons came. Two of them came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and one went away. (Abu Waqid, may Allah be pleased with him, says) that both of them stood for a while near the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then one of them saw a space in the circle and sat there, and the other sat at the back (where the gathering ended), and the third went away. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished (his sermon), he addressed the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and said: Shall I not tell you about the condition of these three men? One of them turned to Allah, so Allah gave him a place, the second felt shy, so Allah (also) was shy with him, and the third turned away, so Allah (also) turned away from him.
One who receives hadith may remember better than listener
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sitting on his camel and a man was holding its rein. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) addressed the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and said: "What day is this?" We remained silent until we thought that perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would give it a name other than its (real) name. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?" We replied, "Yes." Then he asked: "What month is this?" Again, we remained silent until we thought that perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would call it by another name. Then he said: "Is it not Dhul-Hijjah?" We replied, "Yes." (After this) the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, your blood, your wealth, and your honor are as sacred among you as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours. Let those who are present convey this message to those who are absent, for perhaps the one who hears it may convey it to someone who will remember it better than the one who heard it."
Prophet timed lessons to avoid boredom
`Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to choose the appropriate time and occasion to advise us, and out of concern that we might become weary (he would not deliver admonition every day).
Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Make things easy (in religion) and do not make them difficult, and give glad tidings and do not make people averse (by scaring them excessively).
