Mukhtasar Sahih Bukhari
If someone dies owing missed fasts, what should be done?
Narrated from Ummul Momineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever dies and has obligatory fasts to make up, his heir should fast on his behalf."
Narrated Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! My mother has passed away and she had a month's fasts due. Should I fast on her behalf to make up for them?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: "Yes, fulfilling Allah's debt is most deserving."
When should a fasting person break his fast?
The hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Abi Awfa and the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that "Dismount and prepare sattu (barley drink) for me" has already been mentioned (see the previous hadith in the chapter: Fasting and breaking the fast during travel), and in this narration (Sayyiduna Ibn Abi Awfa, may Allah be pleased with him) says that (the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said): "When you see that the signs of night have appeared from this side, then break your fast." And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) pointed with his finger towards the east.
Hastening to break the fast is better.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“The people will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten in breaking the fast.”
If someone breaks fast in Ramadan and then the sun appears, what should he do?
Sayyida Asma bint Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Once during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), we broke our fast on a cloudy day (because we could not accurately determine the time), and then the sun appeared afterwards.
Children fasting.
Rabi’ bint Mu’awwiz (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent a message to the settlements of the Ansar on the morning of ‘Ashura:“Whoever began the morning without fasting should neither eat nor drink for the rest of the day. And whoever began the morning in a state of fasting should complete his fast.”Rabi’ (may Allah be pleased with her) says that after that, we would regularly fast on ‘Ashura and make our children fast as well, and we would make toys out of cotton for them, so that when any of them cried for food, we would give him that toy until the time of iftar came.
Not eating or drinking until suhoor.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, that he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "(O people!) Do not observe continuous fasting (without Suhoor and Iftar), and if any of you insists on doing so, then he may do so only until Suhoor."
Warning against continuous fasting without suhoor or iftar.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting continuously (without breaking the fast at suhoor and iftar). So one of the Muslims said, "O Messenger of Allah! But you observe continuous fasting (i.e., you keep fasts without breaking them)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Which one of you is like me? When I sleep at night, my Lord feeds me and gives me drink." But when they did not refrain, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) observed continuous fasting with them for one day (i.e., ate and drank nothing), then for a second day (i.e., ate and drank nothing), and kept continuous fasts for several days. After that, the (Eid) moon appeared. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), out of displeasure at their refusal, said: "If the moon had not appeared, I would have made you fast even more." And in another narration, also from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take upon yourselves only as much worship as you have the strength for."
If someone makes his brother swear to break a voluntary fast.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood between Sayyiduna Salman and Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with them). Because of this, (one day) Salman went to visit Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) and found Umm Darda in a very distressed state. He asked her, "How are you?" She replied, "Your brother Abu Darda has no need for the world anymore." Meanwhile, Abu Darda also arrived and prepared food for Salman and said to him, "Eat, I am fasting." Salman replied, "I will not eat until you eat as well." Eventually, Abu Darda broke his fast and ate with Salman. Then, when night came, Abu Darda stood up to pray. Salman said, "Sleep for now." So he slept. After a little while, he tried to get up, but Salman said, "Sleep for now." Then, when the last part of the night came, Salman said, "Now get up!" So both of them prayed. Then Salman said to Abu Darda, "Indeed, your Lord has a right over you, your soul has a right over you, and your wife has a right over you, so give each one who has a right their due." Then Abu Darda came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and related the entire incident to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Salman has spoken the truth." (May Allah be pleased with them all)
Fasting in Sha'ban.
Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe voluntary fasts, he would fast so much that we would think he would never stop fasting, and when he would stop, he would stop so much that we would think he would never fast again. And I did not see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) observe a full month of fasting except in Ramadan, and I did not see him fast in any month more than in Sha’ban.
