Duha (forenoon) prayer
Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performing the Duha prayer. But I used to perform it. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to like some actions but would not do them out of fear that if people started doing them, they might become obligatory.
Two rak‘ahs of Duha
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: When a person enters the morning, a charity is due on every joint of his body. Then saying "Subhan Allah" once is charity, saying "Alhamdulillah" once is charity, reciting "La ilaha illallah" once is charity, and saying "Allahu Akbar" once is charity. Enjoining a good word is charity, forbidding an evil thing is charity, and performing two rak‘ahs of Duha prayer suffices for all these matters.
Four rak‘ahs of Duha
Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray four rak'ahs of the Duha prayer, and would add more as Allah willed.
Eight rak‘ahs of Duha
‘Abdullah bin Harith bin Nawfal says that I used to desire and inquire that someone would tell me whether the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Duha (forenoon) prayer, but I did not find anyone who could narrate this to me except Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her). Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her), who is the daughter of Abu Talib, informed me that on the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in the forenoon. A cloth curtain was put up for him, so he performed ghusl (ritual bath). Then he stood and performed eight rak‘ahs of prayer. I do not know whether his standing was long, or his bowing or prostration, (approximately) all were equal. And I did not see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performing the Duha prayer before or after this.
Recommendation of Duha prayer
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) says that my friend (Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah! peace and blessings be upon him) advised me regarding three things: 1. Fasting three days every month. 2. Offering two rak'ahs of Duha (forenoon) prayer. 3. And performing Witr prayer before sleeping.
Salat al-Awwabeen
It is narrated from Qasim Shaybani that Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) saw some people performing prayer at the time of Duha, so he said: These people know well that prayer is more virtuous at a time other than this. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that "the prayer of the oft-returning (awabeen)" is at the time when the feet of the young camels begin to burn (i.e., when the sun has risen high and the heat has intensified).
Whoever prostrates to Allah will enter Paradise
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a person recites a verse of prostration and then performs prostration, Satan withdraws weeping to one side and says: Woe to him or to me! Man was commanded to prostrate and he prostrated, so Paradise is for him. And I was commanded to prostrate and I refused, so Hell is for me.
Virtue of one who prays twelve rak‘ahs (Sunnah) in a day and night
‘Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: There is no Muslim servant who prays twelve rak‘ahs of Sunnah prayers for the sake of Allah every day, apart from the obligatory prayers, except that Allah builds a house for him in Paradise, or he said: a house is built for him in Paradise. Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Since that day, I have always performed them. And ‘Amr (meaning Ibn Aws) said: I have also always performed them since that day. And Nu‘man (meaning Ibn Salim) said the same. And in one narration it is:“Twelve rak‘ahs in one day and night.”
Prayer between the two calls (Adhan and Iqamah)
`Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is prayer between every two calls to prayer (Adhan and Iqamah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times. The third time he said: Whoever wishes may offer it.
Praying voluntary prayers before and after obligatory prayers
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I offered two rak‘ahs before Zuhr and two rak‘ahs after Zuhr (Sunnah) with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and two rak‘ahs after Maghrib, and two rak‘ahs after ‘Isha, and two rak‘ahs after Jumu‘ah. But the two rak‘ahs after Maghrib, ‘Isha, and Jumu‘ah, I offered with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at home.
