Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim
Breaking fast to gain strength against the enemy.
Qaza’ah says: I came to Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and there was a crowd of people around him. When the crowd dispersed, I said to him,“I do not ask you about what these people were asking;”and I asked him about fasting during travel. He said: We traveled to Makkah with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and we were fasting. Then we stopped at a certain place and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“You are now close to your enemy, and breaking the fast will give you more strength. So, permission was given to not fast.”Some of us fasted and some of us did not. Then we stopped at another place and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Tomorrow morning you will meet your enemy, and breaking the fast will give you more strength. So all of you should break your fast.”His statement this time was a definite command, so all of us broke our fast. After that (i.e., after confronting the enemy), we looked at our army and saw that we used to fast during travel with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Choice to fast or not while traveling.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Amr Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! I find myself strong enough to fast while traveling, so if I fast (during travel), is there any sin upon me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "It is a concession from Allah. So whoever takes it has done well, and whoever wishes to fast, there is no sin upon him."
Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) during Ramadan in intense heat, to the extent that some of us would place our hands on our heads due to the severity of the heat, and none among us was fasting except the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Making up missed Ramadan fasts in Sha’ban.
Abu Salamah says: I heard from Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: "Whenever I had to make up missed fasts of Ramadan, I could not make them up except in Sha'ban, and the reason for this was that I used to be occupied in the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and would not find the opportunity."
Making up fasts for a deceased person.
Narrated from Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever dies and has (missed) fasts to make up, his heir should fast on his behalf.
Sayyiduna Buraidah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a woman came and said, "I had given a slave girl in charity to my mother, and now my mother has passed away." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Your reward is established, and now that slave girl has come back to you due to inheritance." She said, "O Messenger of Allah! My mother had one month of (missed) fasts; should I fast on her behalf?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Yes, fast on her behalf." She said, "My mother had not performed Hajj; should I perform Hajj on her behalf?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Perform Hajj on her behalf as well."
About Allah’s saying:“And for those who can bear it is a ransom.”
Narrated by Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him): When this verse was revealed,“And as for those who can fast with difficulty, they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a poor person (for every day)”(Al-Baqarah: 184), whoever wished not to fast would leave the fast and give fidyah. Then the following verse was revealed, which abrogated it. (Meaning, if one has the ability, then he cannot break the fast and give fidyah instead.)
Fasting and breaking fast in other months.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Shaqiq (may Allah be pleased with him) reports: I asked Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her),“Did the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ever fast for the entire days of any month?”She replied,“I do not know that he (peace be upon him) ever fasted the entire month except for Ramadan, nor did he ever leave fasting for an entire month. Rather, he (peace be upon him) used to fast some days in every month until he (peace be upon him) departed from this world (may Allah’s peace and mercy be upon him).”
Virtue of fasting in the path of Allah (jihad).
`Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever fasts for one day in the way of Allah (jihad), Allah Almighty will keep his face seventy years' distance away from the Hellfire.
Virtue of fasting in Muharram.
Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: After the fasts of Ramadan, the most virtuous of all fasts are those of Muharram, which is the month of Allah, and after the obligatory prayers, the most virtuous prayer is the night (Tahajjud) prayer.
