Pilgrims should not fast on Arafah in Arafat.
It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Fadl bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) that some people came to her and differed about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Arafah (in Arafat). Some said that he was fasting and others said that he was not. Then Umm Fadl sent a bowl of milk to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was staying on his camel in Arafat, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) drank it.

Prohibition of fasting on Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr.
Abu Ubaid, the freed slave of Ibn Azhar, narrates that I attended Eid with Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He came and performed the prayer. Then, after finishing, he delivered a sermon to the people and said: "These two days are such that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting on them. One is the day of your breaking the fast after Ramadan, and the other is the day on which you eat from your sacrifices."

`Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said: No person should single out the night of Jumu'ah (Friday) among all nights for standing (in prayer) and nor its day (i.e., Friday) among all days for fasting, unless it is his regular practice (such as fasting on a specific date every month) and Jumu'ah happens to fall on that day.

Fasting three days each month.
It is narrated from Sayyida Mu'adhah al-'Adawiyyah that she asked Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) whether the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast three days every month. She replied, "Yes." Then she asked, "On which days did he fast?" She said, "He did not mind; he would fast on any day."

Dislike of continuous (uninterrupted) fasting.
`Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin As (may Allah be pleased with him) says that news reached the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that I observe fasts continuously (without break) and spend the whole night in prayer. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent someone to me or I met him myself, and he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I have been informed that you observe fasts continuously without breaking them and spend the whole night in prayer. Do not do so. For your eyes have a right over you, your own self has a right over you, and your wife has a right over you. So observe fasts and also break them, and offer (voluntary) prayers and also sleep. And fast one day in every ten days, for you will get the reward of (fasting) the remaining nine days as well. I said: I find in myself the strength for more than this. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Then observe the fast of Dawud (peace be upon him). I said: O Noble Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! What was his fast? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: He would fast one day and break the fast the next day, and when he faced the enemy, he would never flee (from jihad). Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Noble Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! How can I attain this not fleeing from the enemy (i.e., this is a matter of great strength and bravery). Ata (the narrator of the hadith) said: Then I do not know how the mention of perpetual fasting came, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said regarding this: Whoever fasted perpetually did not fast at all (i.e., did not attain the complete reward). Whoever fasted perpetually did not fast at all.

Best fast is that of Dawud: fasting every other day.
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The most beloved fast to Allah is the fast of Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him), and the most beloved prayer is the prayer of Dawud (peace be upon him). (Sayyiduna Dawud [peace be upon him] ) used to sleep half the night, stand (in prayer) for one third of it (i.e., perform Tahajjud), and then sleep for one sixth of it. And he used to fast one day and break his fast the next day.

One who intends a voluntary fast but breaks it.
‘Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that one day the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and said,“Do you have anything (to eat)?”We said,“There is nothing.”So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Then I am fasting.”Then on another day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us, so I said,“O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We have received hais as a gift.”So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Show it to me, and I was fasting since morning.”Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate.
