Hadith of Abdur Rahman ibn Awf al-Zuhri (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith Number: 1687
Abdullah bin Qariz once went to visit Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) when he had fallen ill. Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "It is kinship that has brought you here. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allah Almighty says: I am the Most Merciful (Rahman), I have created the womb (rahm) and derived its name from My own. Whoever maintains it, I will maintain ties with him, and whoever severs it, I will cut him off and shatter him.'"

Nadr bin Shaiban says that once I met Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman, and I said to him: Tell me a hadith from your father which he himself heard from the Prophet (peace be upon him), and that too about the month of Ramadan. He said: Alright, my father narrated this hadith from the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Allah Almighty has made the fasting of Ramadan obligatory, and I have declared its night prayer (Qiyam) as Sunnah. Whoever fasts in Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, and performs the night prayer (Tarawih), will come out of his sins as the day his mother gave birth to him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once he was discussing an issue of prayer with Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him). While they were talking, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) appeared from the front. He said, "Shall I not tell you a hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) which I myself heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" They replied, "Why not." So he narrated this hadith: "If a person is in doubt about the number of rak‘ahs in prayer, he should continue praying until he is certain about the excess."

Iyad bin Ghatif says that once Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill. We went to visit him, and his wife—whose name was Tahifah—was sitting near his head. We asked her how his night had passed. She said: "By Allah! He has spent the whole night with reward and recompense." Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I have not spent the whole night with reward." At first, his face was turned towards the wall, but now he turned his face towards the people and said: "Do you not ask me about what I have said?" The people said: "If we were surprised by your statement, we would have asked you." He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever spends his surplus wealth in the way of Allah, its reward will be seven hundred times. Whoever spends on himself and his family, visits a sick person, or removes something harmful from the road, for every good deed there will be ten rewards. And fasting is a shield, provided that a person does not tear it. And whoever Allah tests physically, it becomes a cause of forgiveness for him.'"

Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described some of his characteristics to us, and said: "It is possible that someone who sees me or hears my words may encounter him." Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid and Sayyiduna Amr bin Al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) were of the opinion that protection should not be granted to him, but Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that we will grant him protection, because I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Any person can grant protection to any person on behalf of the Muslims."

Once, a man came to meet Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) and saw that he was crying. He asked him the reason for his weeping, so Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am crying because one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the victories that would come to the Muslims and the spoils of war that would be obtained. During this, the mention of Syria also came up, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Abu Ubaidah! If you live to see that time, consider only three servants sufficient for yourself: one for yourself, one to accompany you on your travels, and one for your family to serve them and fulfill their needs. And consider three mounts sufficient for yourself: one animal for your own riding, one for your luggage and load, and one for your servant." But now when I look at my house, it appears to me to be filled with servants; when I glance at my stable, it appears to me to be filled with mounts and horses. In this situation, with what face will I meet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? While the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had advised us: "The most beloved and the closest to me among you in my sight will be the one who meets me in the same state in which he parted from me."
